On Tuesday, June 23rd, Governor Inslee mandated that everyone in the state is to wear a face-covering in public. If we don’t mask up, he put it bluntly, “We’d be in deep soup!” We’ve never heard that expression before, but can only imagine it to be Jay’s overwhelmingly polite, Washingtonian way to say, “put a f*cking mask on or we’re doomed.”
If this new mandate inspires you to stay in, here are five different actual soups you could grab for takeout, from pho to khao soi.
The Soups
This Capitol Hill izakaya’s dan dan ramen is spicy, salty, and pairs uncannily well with late June heat rising up to your fifth-floor condo. Which also makes it perfect if you miss the gym sauna.
The slow-poached chicken phở at Phở Bắc Sup Shop is the hero we all need right now. It has comforting broth, crispy shallots, and tart lime - the trifecta of good phở qualities.
If you want something on the thicker side, the lemony avgolemono from Nikos Gyros is delicious, especially when used as a dip for warm pita.
Chowder is appropriate to eat year-round, and the creamy seafood soup at this tourist trap is actually really good. Get it in a sourdough bread bowl.
One of our favorite bowls of khao soi comes from this Thai spot in Fremont. We’d even order it just for the coconutty, braised chicken leg submerged at the bottom.
