The amount of baked goods we’ve consumed has skyrocketed over the past year - because in pandemic times, nothing says comfort like the holy combination of sugar, butter, and flour. And while we’ll always be loyal to Oakland’s pie institutions (like Lois The Pie Queen, Pietisserie, and La Farine, to name a few), there’s nothing wrong with branching out. If you’re looking for a new pie to try, we’ve got you covered - here are three of our favorites in Oakland.
This pop-up has a weekly-changing menu with things like earl grey crème brûlée, pomegranate meringue, and chocolate chess pies, all available for pickup at The Alice Collective in Downtown Oakland on Saturdays. On our most recent visit, we picked up a pie with Cara Cara orange and earl grey filling and a perfect buttery, flaky crust that was nothing short of a masterpiece. Orders open on Tuesdays at 10am online, and keep an eye on their Instagram for weekly menu drops.
Bicycle Pies is an at-home pop-up in Temescal that churns out excellent hand pies. What goes in the flaky, golden-brown pastry changes depending on what’s in season, but expect to see everything from steak and eggs to carnitas to apples with brown butter. There are usually a few sweet and a few savory options - and we fully endorse ordering a few different kinds to share, so you can try as much of the menu as possible. You can pick up your pies, or get them delivered by bicycle if you’re in Oakland. Follow them on Instagram to get menu updates, weekly pre-order forms, and to enjoy some short rib ASMR.
Last year, former Che Fico pastry chef Angela Pinkerton started Pie Society, a pie and pastry pop-up with pick up locations across the Bay. She uses fresh, seasonal ingredients in her five- and nine-inch pies, so the menu changes frequently - but trust that anything you order, whether it’s passionfruit bay leaf meringue or key lime pie, will easily rank in your top five desserts, ever. Order ahead online for pick up in Oakland, Berkeley, or SF on Thursdays and Saturdays.
