A night at Tsumo in Kips Bay can feel similar to most of the budget-friendly omakase spots in the city—they charge a pretty low $58 for the whole experience. After waiting in a room that’s dressed in a bamboo and Japanese wood joinery facade, you’ll be brought into a room with two 12-seat sushi bars, which is pretty different from the tiny, 8-12 seat shoebox counters you usually see at under-$100 omakase spots in the city. Over a short-feeling hour, they serve 12 pieces of nigiri garnished with things like fried shallots and a pickled yuzu condiment, and a toro hand roll. The sushi is just fine, but if you’re looking for an inexpensive spot with a decent sized group, Tsumo is a good option.

Don't let the drab strip mall vibes at this Greenwich Village spot fool you. The sushi at Genki Omakase is high quality, but you only have an hour to eat it.
