Mitica

Greenpoint couples who fall somewhere between “getting serious” and “not Chez Ma Tante again” should consider the tomahawk steak for two at Mitica. This Mexican restaurant is from the team behind one of our favorite fast-casual seafood spots, Mariscos El Submarino, but they’ve ditched the cartoon lobsters at this grown-up, sit-down spot, which is equal parts surf and turf. Duck risotto or mashed potatoes are a rare site on a Mexican menu, but Mitica's versions sit comfortably alongside their numbing aguachile negro and cheesy tlacoyo. And the space isn’t overtly romantic or insufferably trendy: this is a reliable spot to bring a date or a friend when you don’t feel like going into Manhattan. On a warmer night, book a table in the covered back patio.
