Hetman Polish Deli and Foods makes exceptional use of their limited square footage. Every single inch of the Ridgewood convenience store is covered in Polish chips, cookies, buckwheat flakes, cappuccino-flavored pudding mix, and more. There’s also a refrigerated case up front with sausages and tubs of tuna salad, but the main event is hidden in the back, where you’ll find a counter with trays of stuffed cabbage, bean stew, and springy, fist-sized Silesian dumplings. For $20, you can get a feast—one that should involve an order of pierogies. On your way out, grab a brick-sized slice of the house-baked layer cake.
