Bar Covell

Written by

Tell me if this sounds familiar:

“Like every person between the ages of 22 and 39 in Los Angeles, I am an expert in wine. Seriously, I’m like one rented tux away from being a Somalian (that’s the word, right?). It all started when I studied abroad in Italy (wine tip: you can mix red wine and coca-cola to take on your walk to the club). I solidified my love by watching the movie Sideways almost a full two times (I’m not drinking any f*cking merlot! lol that’s my favorite part). And then got to really show off my stuff during that wine tasting tour in Napa with my parents (I puked haha).”

With such a wealth of knowledge overflowing from this city, you’d think that a wine bar that so thoroughly holds your hand through the ordering process would feel a bit condescending. But as much as LA pretends not to need it, the crowd at Covell every night proves otherwise.

We couldn’t tell you if there’s a wine menu at Covell. Instead, you approach the bar and are asked for some tidbits of information: a few adjectives to describe your tastes, your favorite blends, etc. And before we managed to get out the words “red” and “dry”, there were three samples sitting in front of us. A few sips later and we had our wine for the night. And it was pretty damn perfect.

These guys take their wine seriously, and that flows into the menu. The food here is absolutely secondary. It’s simply meant to compliment, but that does not mean that it isn’t wonderful. You have your pick of a few small plates, charcuteries, and a grand total of 5 options for entrees, and don’t think for a second that your next wine pick won’t take your order into account. Just remember to get there early (or score a reservation if you have a large group), as the place can get crowded.

Food Rundown

These are pricey ($6 for each type of cheese), but wine isn’t wine without cheese. Order some.

Same goes for the meats. Get a board and get to living.

Mac n Cheese

This is the true, holy sh*t moment of the food menu here. We always go with the spicy version, which is one of the best examples of Mac n Cheese glory that you can find in LA.

Croque Monsieur

This is a dish you should only be allowed to order once or twice in your lifetime. Grilled cheese sandwiches have enough cheese. They really do. Needless to say, this is decadent and amazing.
