Lots going down this weekend in LA. Allergy season is in full swing, which means that the city’s flowers are in full bloom, and we’ve never needed so much Allegra. But other than that, there are some incredible events happening this weekend, like Shanghainese soup specials in Chinatown, bakery pop-ups, and lots of places to buy gifts for your mom. Here’s what you should be doing and eating in Los Angeles this weekend, May 7th through 9th.
This Jefferson Park restaurant is combining two of life’s greatest things this weekend - seafood and craft beer. On Saturday, May 8th, Harold and Belle’s is hosting a Crawfish & Crowns event, where they’ll be serving pints of beer with the owners of Crowns & Hops, a Black-owned beer brand and brewery. The event runs from 12-2pm on Jefferson Blvd.
The Chinatown tea shop has added a new item to their menu. It’s a take on the Shanghainese soup, yanduxian, a warm dish usually eaten during the spring when fresh bamboo shoots are available. Their version contains pork belly, cured Chinese ham, bamboo shoots, and bean curd knots, and is available for pickup and delivery through their website.
Night + Market Sahm
Westsiders, rejoice: Night Market’s Venice location has now reopened for dine-in service. Walk-ins are available, but due to their limited capacity, priority will be given to reservations. Head to their website to place one.
Gemini Bake House, one of our favorite bakery pop-ups in the city, is offering a limited-run Italian ice special on May 8th, made with Meyer lemons and Arnold Palmer ices. It’s a perfect treat to take up to your roof and enjoy while you fill an inflatable pool with water and pretend you’re on the Amalfi coast.
From May 16th through 23rd, Pop Off LA is creating a special food event that centers LA’s rich AAPI community restaurants and chefs. According to their website, it’s “not a festival,” but rather an event where chefs across the city collaborate on one-of-a-kind, limited-edition dishes. On their opening day, Secret Lasagna will be teaming up with Anajak Thai to create a chicken kraprao lasagna, made with red sauce and Thai basil pesto, and Bridgetown Roti will be partnering with Rice Box to serve okra callaloo with fried soft shell crab and porchetta. Even though it’s not happening this weekend, each dish/collaboration will be available only on the date(s) listed, and needs to be preordered. Head to their website for more information.
A FEW MOTHER'S DAY SPECIALS FOR YOU
Destroyer is selling beignets by the half-dozen, which come filled with vanilla creme, and served with a side of strawberry caramel and crème fraîche for dipping. They’re $40 per box, and you can place an order here.
This Saturday, May 8th, pizza pop-up La Sorted has joined forces with Gemini Bake House for a Mother’s Day event. The menu will include baked goods, bread, flowers, and lasagna for that special woman in your life. Preorders are live on Gemini Bake House’s website, or you can go and pick them up on Saturday from 10am-sell out.
In addition to the crawfish and beer event, Harold & Belle’s is also offering a Mother’s Day special this weekend. For just $95, you and your mom will be treated to a Southern family feast including gumbo, fried chicken, catfish strips, red beans and rice, potato salad, and bread pudding with whiskey sauce. It’s available to order through ChowNow, or you can call (323) 735-9023 to place an order.
