Islington doesn’t have many Afghan restaurants but, even if it did, Mihan on Blackstock Road would be a spot worth knowing about. The billowing naans hang from metal trees, the lamb shank collapses from the bone, and everything is made for many hands to get involved, scooping kabli pulao and working your way through pleasing chapli kebabs. Compared to other (admittedly excellent) versions across the city, the charsi karahi isn’t quite as smooth nor the chapli kebabs as juicy, but this is moreish food. The room, plain and comfortable with illustrated posters of Afghanistan, is nothing to write home about. But if you live around Highbury then you’ll more than likely be wandering to and from Mihan on a regular basis.
