The Tokyo transplant on Great Newport Street makes light of other fast-casual UK chains (apologies, Spaghetti House) with crowd-pleasing portions of Japanese curry that will warm the coldest of hearts. There’s a degree of customisation at Coco Ichibanya—you choose from a seven level curry sauce spice system that begins at mild and ends at nuclear. Trust us, ‘Crazy Hot’ means just that. From there you just need to decide whether you want the familiarity of katsu chicken or pork, a range of omelette options, or the lesser seen and appreciated frankfurter curry. Everything can be added or taken away to taste and the room, that mixes booths and solo counter seats, similarly caters to all.

Hiden, a Japanese curry shop, is a helpful spot in Finsbury Park that takes you from massive croissants filled with chicken katsu to fragrant curries in the evening.
