Lilac Tiger
Included in
Lilac Tiger can seem like a typical neighborhood bar. It has drinks and things to soak up those drinks, like burgers and fried chicken sandwiches. But beneath the guise of a local dive is a South Asian restaurant that's making creative and flavorful food—and, quite frankly, is just a great place to hang.

This Wicker Park spot is tiny and constantly busy. There are only a handful of tables, which fill up quickly. It’s walk-in only, so there’s often a couple of groups waiting in front. And since The Coach House (a tasting menu restaurant from the same team) is located in the courtyard behind Lilac Tiger, you’ll notice people passing throughout the night. Throw in some bumping hip-hop, and the small space has a lot going on. But this could all be happening in a bedroom closet and we’d still cram ourselves in there just to see Lilac Tiger do its thing.

As it turns out, that “thing” is a mix of unique and traditional takes on South Asian food. Bowls of mushroom or chicken chettinad have a perfect mix of creaminess and comforting spice. Their burger with mint chutney and the sweet and spicy THC (Tandoori hot chicken) sandwich make other handhelds question what they’re doing with their lives. While the poutine might not get Canada’s stamp of approval, we don’t care—a french fry doesn’t know greatness until it’s been showered in rich Korean curry sauce and crumbly paneer. And thanks to a well-curated list of beer, sake, and cocktails (like an ube colada with a tinge of malört because, well, Chicago) you’ll be convinced to keep your barstool warm just a little bit longer.
Lilac Tiger is the complete package: fantastic food combined with equally delicious cocktails in a fun space. A first date, post-work drinks with friends, or even a solo dinner—any excuse to visit is a perfect one. As long as you have a THC sando in one hand and a Lilac colada in the other, you’re in good company.

THC Sando
The fried chicken itself is fantastic, with a crispy outside and tender inside. But the layers of honey glaze, gochujang aioli, and achar are what make this one of the best chicken sandwiches in the city.

Ferrani Special
If you just thought “Wow, that chicken sandwich would be great in nugget form”— surprise, it is.

Tiger Poutine
Forget about gravy. This poutine will have you wishing all fries came with rich Korean curry and paneer. Upgrade with the duck confit for extra flavor.

Wazwanimal Burger
We want to personally thank the cows responsible for the beef bacon and perfectly charred patties on the burger. But what truly makes this is the mint chutney and jalapeño cheese—it’s a flavor paradox that’s simultaneously light and refreshing as well as rich and hot.

Duck Fried Rice
The fried rice has plenty of crispy bits without being overcooked or too dry. Buttery pieces of confited duck and the fried egg add richness, while pickled red onion and mint brighten up each spoonful.

Tiger Prawns
If there’s a time being selfish should be acceptable, it’s when these prawns are on the table. Part of it is because there’s a limited supply (you only get six). The other part is that they’re incredible—savory, tangy, sweet, and with added herbaceousness from Thai basil.
