You can have a good time at Trejo’s Tacos—especially after a trip to Portobello Market, and if passable tacos, satisfying nachos, and great cocktails do it for you. But there’s no escaping that the food at this LA import ranges from okay (bland carnitas bowls) to decent (chips made in-house, a flavourful steak asada taco). Danny Trejo—actor and now restaurant owner—has a rough-and-ready, vest-wearing, machete-wielding reputation, but this Notting Hill spot is much sleeker than the mustachioed man it’s named after. Lights are dim, the music is of the acoustic guitar, indie film variety, and a mural of kissing luchadores is mirrored by hungry solo diners who are all but frenching their chicken tikka taco. Stick to creamy, refreshing horchata cocktails or the selection of nine margaritas—including a ferocious fresno chile number—and pick at crunchy chips drizzled with moreish chipotle crema. But leave the tacos to these excellent spots.
