Gurkhas Diner
Gurkhas is a Nepalese restaurant in Balham that serves tasty things that will inevitably lead you to say something embarrassing like ‘I live for some aromatic chicken’ out loud. Open since the early noughties, you’ll catch local families and casual couples eating here throughout the week and passing roti around the simple metal tables out front. Some of the dishes like the momo can be a little hit or miss but you really can’t go wrong with a round of rice and the coconut-infused tarai chicken. Or the prawn asworya, which the menu informs us is ‘favoured by young princes for their romantic nights out’. When the dish is this packed full of garlic, fresh coriander, and subtle spices, we can absolutely understand the princes’ logic. The sweet mango pickle guliyo achar should also be on your order, especially if you’re getting involved in one of their many fiery meat numbers.
