Building a restaurant around a 100-year-old log cabin kind of pigeonholes you into serving wild game, or at least that’s what the folks behind Rainbow Lodge in the Heights lean into. If you weren’t sure what the restaurant’s specialty is, you’d realize it once taking a seat in the game room. So many mounted heads line the walls, Ace Ventura would probably spontaneously combust on site. The steakhouse-adjacent restaurant has served elk, antelope, bison, quail, duck, venison—among other varied cuts of meat and seafood. We can’t get enough of the fried quail, which tastes like the best chicken fried steak you’ve ever had, or the fresh pan-seared rainbow trout. You could be dining in the Hill Country or maybe some distant Rocky Mountain chalet, but you’re just off TC Jester and Ella, surrounded by a lot of old fishing gear, mounted animal heads, and, like, a lot of wood.
