It’s easy to forget that Hong Kong was once just a collection of fishing villages, what with all the tall buildings and neon signs. But Lantau Island, a mountain-covered island to the west of Hong Kong and Kowloon, is a nice reminder and worth a day trip if you have the time. Head to the Country Park for a walk and then end up at Mavericks, a lunch and dinner spot right on the beach with a British-inspired menu. If you’re lucky you’ll spot some water buffalo too.
