Sweet Hut has plopped five pink-hued locations around the metro since opening in 2014. Contrary to their name, they also have a good selection of savory pastries and sandwiches, so they’re a great stop for a quick work lunch and midday pick-me-up treats. Our favorites here are their caterpillar roll (a billowy soft bun encasing a cream cheese filling), taro pastry, chicken curry puff, and matcha egg tart (a relatively new addition). And if you’re an egg tart fan, they offer a delicious variety of flavors. While parking at their Midtown location may seem like a hassle, the cafe offers validation for the parking garage around the corner past Taco Mac.

Momo is the perfect social outing to catch up on all the tea (but with matcha). We order the Iced Strawberry Matcha Latte with oat milk, along with a matcha croissant. But their pastry display is filled with so many enticing Japanese baked goods that you’ll actually need a couple friends to try them all. The black sesame cookie reminds us of a peanut butter cookie with its comforting flavors. Another favorite is the banoffee cream croissant, which is filled with banana- and coffee-flavored cream and topped with a caramel glaze. If and when your conversation gets really juicy, you can find more intimate seating in the mezzanine overlooking the interstate. And you can also continue the discussion over ramen at Momonoki, which connects to the cafe.

Located in the iconic Chinatown Mall in Chamblee, Family Baking (previously known as Rolls Village) stands apart for their reasonably priced menu, vegan-friendly options, and unique bakery items (eyes on you, Spam baos, hot dog flower buns, and chocolate baos). But if there’s one must-have order here, it’s the Hong Kong egg tarts, located in a heated display case right next to the door so you can’t miss it. The best in Atlanta, these flaky tarts cradle slightly sweet and eggy custard middles. And for plant-based crowds, the vegan coconut pandan bun is another one of our favorites. While there are a few tables here, most people grab their pastries to go, and the bakery often stay well stocked into the late afternoon.

Leftie Lee’s is one of the more creative bakeries in the metro. Switching up traditional Asian bakery offerings, the Avondale Estates bakeshop offers fun things like their ube sweet buns and Everything But the Bagel buns. Their version of the hot dog-stuffed bun is our favorite in the ATL. Their breakfast and lunch menu changes, so keep your eyes peeled when their delicious Korean fried chicken and gravy with a kimchi biscuit makes an appearance. They tend to sell out of items, so get here before 10am, especially on the weekends.

If you’re looking for Hong Kong Bakery by name, don’t bother, as it simply has a sign saying “bakery.” Just know this old-school Chinese bakery is next door to Kamayan ATL in the Asian Square strip mall off Buford Highway. Also know you should get here early since many items sell out by the afternoon. Hong Kong Bakery is where you should go for traditional Chinese offerings, such as cocktail buns, curried beef puffs, pineapple buns, egg tarts, and wife cookies, amongst other items. Our favorite things here are the char siu baos, which remind us of childhood.

Hansel and Gretel is an Asian bakery with three locations in the Atlanta area, including their cafe in the Mall Corners Shopping Center in Duluth. This spot is well-known for their beautiful, show-stopping desserts, cakes, and pastries, which are displayed in the glass case by the register. Their designed cakes are so gorgeous it kind of feels like the knife cuts both ways when you slice into one. We also love their tarts, like their berry white chocolate tart, which offer a light, pleasant sweetness. And there’s always the allure of too-cute-to-resist items like their Kirby cream puffs. You’ll always be joined by a steady stream of customers, but consider the check-out line a benefit since you’ll have extra time to throw more pastries in your basket. Once you’ve got your goods, retreat to one of their cozy booths or to their outdoor tables.

White Windmill in Duluth’s Nukoa Plaza is the perfect work cafe—and they also have a location in Doraville with late-nigh hours. In addition to their sweet to savory Korean menu, the environment is quiet and relaxing, so you’ll always see folks working or studying in the private booths. Get the Earl Grey cookies, which are the perfect accompaniment to a cup of tea, green bean bread, and their most popular item, the bungeoppang. These slightly sweet fish waffles are made-to-order and can be filled with red bean paste or custard. And if you're here, you should order one. Though one bungeoppang is big enough for two people, it’ll still take some restraint and a big heart to share it.

Just when you thought life couldn’t get any sweeter, Mozart Bakery in Duluth said hold my pumpkin roll. Curling up with a sweet treat on a plush couch in a natural-light filled corner surrounded by potted plants feels like bliss. We like the rice red bean donut, which has a very chewy exterior, like a mochi, but with added crispiness. We also enjoy their sweet pumpkin roll, walnut pound cake, and pumpkin manju. So whenever we need a mood booster, this beautiful and airy Korean bakery checks all the boxes.

Tree Story can be hard to find among all the stores and restaurants that make up the Park Village Shopping Center in Duluth. But before you get overwhelmed, just look to the right of Super H Mart. The interior is cute and colorful, and there’s a separate seating area where students and remote workers can find quiet space. Take a book to read from their bookshelf, sip some honey ginger tea, and nibble on pastries such as the red bean bun or chestnut manju. Like the other Korean bakeries in the area, they also offer bingsu, a shaved ice dessert with different choices in toppings. Yet, Tree Story remains our area favorite because their calming, cozy atmosphere is a reprieve for the bustling shopping center.

The International Korean chain Paris Baguette has three metro locations (Atlanta, Duluth, and Doraville) each with cases of pastries, cakes, and desserts lining the room. Get in line with your tray, and peruse all the delicious selections from ham and cheese croissants to mochi donuts and slices of matcha strawberry cake. Go for whatever catches your eye, but make sure their savory buttery croissant is on your tray before you reach the register. It’s a nice contrast to the sweets. When you're fighting for crumbs at other bakeries, Paris Baguette is always well stocked. So even without a special order, they’re your best bet if you’re looking to grab a bunch of pastries for an office party.

The Soon’s logo may be hard to spot, so rather look for the "bakery & cafe" sign in this Suwanee strip mall. Though it’s a small space, the bakery has a welcoming bright interior. They are known for their milk bread loaves, and that’s what you should get. The soft and fluffy milk breads have a wide range of varieties, from the blueberry or apple to squid ink-flavored. We also enjoy the sweet potato tapioca bread, which is made to look exactly like a sweet potato on the outside and in. If you’re looking for a more savory option, their sandwiches are all made with fresh milk bread as well.

We look forward to any celebratory event where we have an excuse to buy a dozen or so of these delicious treats. Not to be confused with Sweet Spot in Doraville, The Sweet Spot Bakery is located in a Duluth strip mall behind a Chevron and specializes in gourmet cupcakes and cakes, and that’s the reason why you should be here. If you haven’t had their cupcakes before, they will tell you to store them in the refrigerator to preserve their whipped topping. These are light, airy spongy cakes topped with the freshest tasting “not too sweet” cream and butter frosting we’ve ever had. The passionfruit, mango, Thai tea, and pandan are our favorite flavors. It’s a carryout only, but we’re sure we’re not the only ones who dig in for a bite before we make it out the door.

Confections opened in 2020, quickly gained popularity, and now has three locations in north Metro Atlanta. Their Duluth cafe is in a strip mall next to Sambong Naengmyun, which is equally busy, so come early for easier parking and before bakery items sell out. While a cupcake might sound underwhelming in a lineup of more interesting pastries, get one if it’s in stock. Think sponge cake filled with cream cheese filling and topped with even more cream cheese and Biscoff cookie crumbs—it’s our favorite item here. And if you’re in the mood for something savory, we recommend their onion king brioche stuffed with ham, egg salad, and arugula. And we love that the interior of the cafe reminds us of an outdoor patio with plants and many tables donning umbrellas.

Of course we’d fall for a place called Bread Connection. But this Taiwanese bakery is more than its name since you can fulfill your gluten fantasies and walk out with a savory pork bento or a pork and rice bowl. We particularly enjoy the Taiwanese chicken nuggets. They’re freshly fried, well seasoned, and have a crispy exterior and juicy interior. We also like that they have traditional pastries, such as pork floss-topped ham and cheese buns, and sesame and coconut buns. There are only a few tables here, so most people ordered to go. And if you do, be sure to grab one of their refreshing, not-too-sweet fruit teas, too.
