Thai tea boba bowl

“Viridian opened in Uptown Oakland last year before the pandemic, but only recently did I get to experience their stunning, pink-tinted interior when they reopened for indoor dining. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by their new menu of delicious, beautifully plated Asian American-inspired small plates and desserts. Not to mention their cocktails, which are made with everything from White Rabbit candy to Thai chilis. But the one dessert I can’t stop thinking about is the boba bowl, a wonderful creation of melt-in-your-mouth Thai tea granita, airy peanut meringue, and burnt honey custard piled on top of chewy black boba. Every bite was light, sweet, and full of texture, and felt like eating a spoonful of snowflakes.”

We’re in the midst of Reopening Season. And one bar that’s back (with a new executive chef) is Viridian. The neon-drenched Downtown Oakland cocktail spot has been offering indoor seating (walk-ins only) since April, along with a new menu of things like tempura calamari okonomiyaki, walnut prawn skewers, turnip cake and XO sauce, and crispy rice tuna tartare. The fact that Viridian was dubbed one of the “Best New Bars In America” last month should also give you the extra push needed to check them out, if you haven’t already.

This Oakland cocktail bar pays tribute to Hong Kong cinema with its stunning neon lights and sculptures. Their cocktails, snacks, and desserts are works of art, too. In the pandemic era, they pivoted to an online marketplace, which offers takeout items like batched cocktails for one or two people, hojicha shortbread, black sesame banana cookies, and frozen buns you steam at home.

The Asian-American cocktail bar in Oakland is celebrating the year of the Ox with a few special cakes: yuzu black sesame, almond hojicha, salted egg yolk, and one inspired by Lucky Candy. Cake orders must be placed a week in advance here (pick up only).

Viridian in Oakland was one of our favorite new bars to hang out at before the pandemic hit (they opened in February 2020). And coming here meant enjoying a tomato beef cocktail with some desserts and dim sum, and hunkering down on a bar stool (if you were lucky enough - this place got packed) to admire the stunning neon lights. Now that indoor dining is back, so is getting to appreciate Viridian’s gorgeous space and taste their entirely new menu of things like tempura calamari okonomiyaki, walnut prawn skewers, turnip cake and XO sauce, and crispy rice tuna tartare.

Movie Pairing: The Guest (Netflix)

“In the horror-comedy The Guest, Dan Stevens is a sociopathic soldier on a murder streak. You will love the synth soundtrack, and you will wonder what happened to Matthew Crawley from Downton Abbey. If you’re like me, it might also make you think about, Viridian in Oakland, a neon-tinged bar I cannot wait to get back to after this is all over. They’re currently serving bottled cocktails for two ($20), wine, and a variety of snacks and desserts, like yuzu osmanthus cake.”
