Everyone has that one test they secretly give someone at the beginning of a relationship to see if they’re worth pursuing. Maybe you want to know if they’ll offer you the last stick of gum or if they’ll wash your shirt when you “accidentally” leave it at their house. We take people to Red’s Java House.
It’s an old shack on the Embarcadero overlooking the water that makes burgers and fries and has a back patio that runs into the massive parking structure behind it. As individual parts, there’s nothing too mind-blowing about this, but when it all comes together, and you’re drinking a cold beer while looking back up at the Bay Bridge, it’s a solid reminder about how great simple things can be. The burgers are simple, but they come on a chewy sourdough roll, which makes it a little different and enough of an excuse to come here. If someone doesn’t get that, then they can go buy their own Doublemint to kill the time between loads of their own laundry.
