Ever since we first tried the chicken-filled momos at Dancing Yak, we’ve been coming here as often as we check our social media feeds. Sure, that’s an over exaggeration, but it gets the point across: Make a trip to this incredible Nepali spot immediately, especially for their slightly expanded menu that now includes more skewers and small plates.
If it’s been a while since you’ve stepped into this spacious, jewel-toned restaurant in the Mission, know that the tweaked menu still includes their legendary momos that are taken up a level with an excellent spicy tomato and roasted soybean sauce. And you’ll still want to get the house specials and curries, like the creamy chicken cashew curry, or the spicy baigun tarkari (minced and fire-roasted eggplant) that’s surprisingly hearty. There are plenty of vegan and vegetarian-friendly options, everything is shareable, and the whole menu pairs well with any of their delicious cocktails.

While the daal bhat thali and tandori plates are gone (we were always lukewarm about them anyway), we have no complaints about the lengthier skewer section, which now includes chicken, pork, lamb, and paneer. We love the juicy lamb, which has a perfect charred crust and comes with a side of tangy tomato achar to brighten it up. And because there are now 15 great small plates to choose from, prepare to meet a challenge in restraint. If you’re unsure what to get for the table, focus on the spicy sauteed shrimp with a tangy and thick ginger sauce, the spicy fried cauliflower, and the potato-and-green-pea-filled samosas that are as large as softballs.
Unless a meteor hits Earth, one thing that will never change is us heading to Dancing Yak for nearly any occasion. This spot is big enough for large groups, and casual enough to work well for a midweek dinner. And if you walk in without a reservation, you’ll most likely land a table—like we said, this place has plenty of room to fit you, your friends, and a jumbo jet. The staff is also very friendly, and will go out of their way to make sure you enjoy your meal. Which isn’t an exaggeration to say you will.

Momos
One of our favorite things on the menu, we’d come here for these alone. The dumplings are filled with chicken, chives, garlic, and momo masala, and served with a creamy spicy tomato and roasted soybean sauce. You need these for your table.

Samosa Tarkari
These spiced potato and pea-filled samosas are giant. One order could be a starter for three to four people. Tamarind chutney and a mint sauce come on the side.
Spicy Cauliflower
The cauliflower is crispy and topped with a spicy chili sauce. If you love fried and spicy things, you will love this dish.
Sauteed Spicy Shrimp
We have a strong appreciation for the tangy ginger, garlic and tomato sauce these large black tiger shrimps are bathed in. There are only four shrimps per order, and you will probably want them all for yourself.
Lamb Skewers
You can’t go wrong with any of the skewers, but we have a soft spot for the lamb. The meat is marinated in fresh herbs and spices, and skewered and grilled until it’s beautifully charred. Even after it’s gone through this process, the lamb still comes out tender.
Baigun Tarkari
Spicy, thick, and hearty, this is the dish we want every time the thermostat hits 50. The minced eggplant is cooked with onion, garlic, and spices including cumin, coriander, and turmeric. It’s an understated blend, and one we keep coming back to.
