Part Southern-style breakfast spot, part coffee shop, and part vinyl record store, the Museum District restaurant Mo’ Better Brews is the go-to for an (almost) daily vegan brunch (just don't go on Mondays when it's closed). While the energy is high and the food options are almost limitless, the service can be a bit inconsistent. But still, a meal at Mo’ Better Brews is worth the trip, especially for the fried mushrooms.

Like any old-school soul diva you’ll hear crooning over the speakers, the menu at Mo’ Better Brews has range, with pages and pages of vegan food to choose from. With everything from boudain sushi rolls to vegan breakfast sandwiches made out of donut buns, the menu feels a bit like that of a local diner—the options are almost overwhelming, but ideal for a group of friends with varying taste buds. Seasoned with intention, and crackling with every bite, the brunch heavy hitters are the fried ‘shrooms, which can be found anywhere from a bowl of cajun-style grits, to topping a waffle, to holding their own in a breakfast taco.

Even on the hottest summer days, most people flock to the huge patio space to take down a serious brunch. With huge sunshades, charming fairy lights, and some very hard-working fans, it doesn’t at all feel like you’re eating outside in Texas. Indoors, the dining room looks like an understated cafe where the main characters of a sitcom would meet up for their daily latte. The service at Mo’ Better Brews can be a little sleepy, especially on the weekends when the restaurant gets busy. But if you aren’t in a rush, the occasional mishap from the super-sweet staff will feel more endearing than annoying.

Take your friends to Mo’ Better Brews for coffee or daily brunch, or when you’re in the mood to be amongst regulars that are sitting and studying, working on their laptops, or perusing the stacks of vinyl records for the latest additions. For the best experience, swing by here on a weekday when it’s less crowded, or come on the weekend when you have time to spare. But whatever you decide to do, remember to always get the fried mushrooms.

Hot Honey Shrooms & Grits

While many Southern-style vegan places attempt fried oyster mushrooms, the ones at Mo’ Better Brews shine both on their own and in any dish they accompany. The best iteration is a bowl of the fried ‘shrooms, coated in hot honey for a dose of sweet heat, with buttery grits underneath.

Boudain Balls

Fried, crispy, and pinch of spice, the boudain balls are a classic appetizer option at Mo’ Better Brews.

Naked Fried Brussels

Coated in a brown sugar glaze and charred, the fried brussels sprouts are some of our favorite appetizers here.

Coltrane Croissant Sandwich

A vegan patty and vegan eggs are crammed into the massive croissant sandwich. It’s decadent and filling, and we can’t get enough of it.

Strawberry Cheezecake Ice Cream Waffle

A perfectly crispy and fluffy waffle is topped with strawberry preserves and a dollop of coconut ice cream.
