Alta Toro
With its glossy magazine covers and social media onslaught, this modern Latin opening snuck up on nobody. But coming from the colorful team that brought 5Church, we didn’t expect any less fanfare. The new Midtown address has curated art, a lively bar, and a whimsical 20-foot tree centerpiece. Nightly entertainment draws the business types and folks who require social media documentation of their “interesting” lives. But fire twirlers are not the only show. The kitchen has moves, too, taking inspiration from places such as El Salvador and Mexico to create shareable gambas al ajill and a smokey chicken tamal plate. Unfortunately, the two-person seafood paella isn’t the showstopper it could be because the rice lacks flavor—which is a shock, seeing as how there’s so much of it everywhere else.
