Akara House
Included In
The chef/owner of Akara House used to work at McDonald’s, and usually that wouldn’t be a significant fact, but at this counter-service Nigerian spot in Crown Heights, it explains a lot. Their akara sandwich, the specialty here, is a Big Mac-esque creation involving a thick fritter, vegan cheese, mayo and pickles. Instead of being a sad excuse for meat, it’s a tasty bean-based innovation, with an ultra-soft center and a crackly exterior.
The sandwiches are made in a small kitchen that might resemble the one in your own apartment, complete with a regular old oven, and littered with industrial grade pots full of jollof rice. Round out your order with rice, and some moi moi, and then head to Brower Park. The akara on your saucy sandwich will still be perfectly crisp.
