Everyone knew that kid in high school who was just the coolest. Everyone liked him: the jocks (well he was the quarterback), the cheerleaders (natch), the geeks, the motorheads... The dude was frickin’ Ferris Bueller. Never trying too hard but just hard enough.

Well, that’s The Royal. So much of what they do could be viewed as pretentious, but for some reason, it just works, and works really well. It has a dish based around an avocado (but isn’t toast!). You have to order at the bar, no matter where you sit (but the bartenders are all incredibly friendly). It has house-made vermouth on tap to go along with a lengthy cocktail menu (but they’re really good!). It serves a regional cuisine (but it’s Colombian, who else is doing that?).

It’s a place we keep coming back to because every time we go we leave feeling better than when we came in. Who wouldn’t after they’re stuffed with arepas and cocktails feeling the breeze come in from the open windows?

And just like every type of person like Ferris, I can’t imagine anyone not liking The Royal because it fits so many situations. Solo at the bar or window counter, catching up with a group of friends, date night, hell, even breakfast and coffee on your way into work. So keep on doing your thing, The Royal. You totally have our vote for homecoming king.

Grilled Avocado

Please sit down before we tell you this, but yes, it’s avocado based and isn’t served on toast. I know, deep breaths, we’ll get through this together. Try to get over your shock and order this because it’s the best avocado on grains dish you’ll find. Somewhere between a salad and a meal, it’s the perfect starter to share.

Masa dough hot pockets stuffed with cheese and meat. Can’t go wrong with any of these.

The kitchen sink breakfast or brunch pick. Rice, potatoes, peas, and sausage all mixed up with a fried egg on top. No better way to start the day.

For the indecisive people out there, this is a gigantic meat platter to share. Go big, then go home to sleep it off.

Grilled Pork Loin

They’re able to get a nice char on the outside of this, but keep the inside all juicy. A true feat.

Yes, do these. Multiple, if possible. The vermouth on tap is recommended by itself or in a drink.

The food at Colada Shop is just okay, but the space and location make it a good place for a quick meal around U Street.

There are plenty of places to get ramen in DC, but Haikan is doing it a bit differently. Try it for a casual dinner next time you’re in Shaw.
