9 Spots To Check Out If You’re Heading Back To The Office

It’s entirely possible you’ve spent the last 16 months working at a “temporary” set up in your bedroom. Ideally one positioned so the chair that houses your not-dirty-but-not-clean clothes collection isn’t visible on video calls. But now, NYC is opening up and a relic of the past is back - the work hang.
Together with Justworks, the ultimate HR platform for small and growing businesses, we’re celebrating the restaurants that will help you get the team back together. We’ve partnered on a community-centered campaign where we’ve enlisted the help of NYC-based artist Eugenia Mello to feature artwork at these restaurants that inspires you and your team to get back together. Whether you’re back in the office and need somewhere to grab a coffee or escape for lunch, looking to hold in-person meetings, or meet up with investors and other founders, these are the places to do it.
Justworks makes it easier to start, run, and grow a business with simple software and expert support for benefits, payroll, HR, and compliance. For more on Justworks click here. This Gramercy spot serves bowls and platters that follow the usual formula for fast-casual food: one protein, some vegetables, and at least one form of carbohydrates. Here, though, you’ll find Chinese-inspired dishes like Yunnan brisket with chili garlic mint sauce, and Sichuan-spiced cauliflower, plus some delicious and plump wontons. The ingredients are given noticeably more care than whatever happens at your normal lunch grab-and-go place and still, nothing on the menu (not even the Mandarin duck) costs more than $16.

After transitioning to a takeout window-model during the pandemic, Musket Room reopened with a menu of all-day snacks and drinks outside on their sidewalk - plus truly decadent doughnuts on weekends that you should plan your week around. Come here the next time you want a cold negroni on a Nolita sidewalk, a couple of shrimp skewers and oysters, or a pleasant place to sit with someone you haven’t seen in over a year.

This natural wine bar in the East Village has a good size outside area so you’ll have an easier time finding seating here than at their (also excellent) sister bar Ruffian, whether you get a table underneath an umbrella on the sidewalk or in their street-dining hut. Kindred’s selection of wine changes pretty often, but expect offerings like sparkling wine from the last bottles a small producer ever made. Don’t skip the crispy chickpeas to snack on while you drink.

This Caribbean spot on 5th Avenue is a real triple threat: the Jamaican cocktails are memorable, their jerk lamb meatballs and stuffed snapper are worth traveling for, and they even have a few booths for small groups on their sidewalk patio.
Negril’s large outdoor dining setup now includes artwork by Eugenia Mello. Head to Negril on July 15th to take advantage of a buy one, get one free Happy Hour, thanks to Justworks.
This Indian restaurant has fenced off the parking lane in front of their 51st Street restaurant for outdoor lunch and dinner service. It’s kind of like a block party, but with onion kulcha and tandoori prawns instead of half-deflated bouncy castles and six-year olds maniacally chasing you with a bubble wand.

If we were 100% certain it wouldn’t get into our eyes, ears, and nose, we’d dive into a pool of the coconut crab curry from Fish Cheeks in Noho. The only thing we don’t like about Fish Cheeks is that everyone else likes it here - the bright, noisy space is always packed.

La Contenta serves some of our favorite fish tacos in the city, and the tiny Lower East Side location is perfect for when you want to have a fun night out in the neighborhood. If you’re closer to the West Village, La Contenta has a second location on 6th Avenue with significantly more tables than the original spot.

On paper, Kokomo is a Caribbean spot in Williamsburg where you can get pastas, flatbreads, and more topped with things like jerk chicken and oxtail. All of that is true - but it’s also important to know that going to this place is just like attending a party. They run a KokoHour from 4-7pm with discounted drinks and often have live DJs on weekends. Whenever the weather is warm and you’re looking for an outdoor spot to get an exciting brunch, think of Kokomo.

Maman is a cafe and bakery with a few different locations around the city, including one in Soho with a semi-secret back patio. The cookies are very good. Even Oprah thinks so.
Find Eugenia Mello’s artwork on Maman’s coffee cups at their University Place, King Street, Tribeca, and Greenpoint locations.
