Emerald City Fish & Chips

Perfect For:Cheap EatsLunch

Down near Columbia City, there’s a fish and chip shop on the corner of Rainier and Charlestown that you might have driven right past without noticing. Next time you’re driving by, stop in. Not only do they serve some of the best fried seafood in the city, but there’s a ton of variety here, from perfectly-seasoned cod to crunchy, breaded salmon. But what you really want is their incredible crab puppies, which sound like the cutest baby animals in existence but in reality are a delicious cross between crab cakes and hushpuppies. Order these with extra sides of Emerald City’s spicy tartar sauce, or be eternally sad when you run out with still a handful of fries left.

Food Rundown

Crab Puppies

If, somehow, the world replaced all hush puppies and crab cakes with this excellent hybrid, we’d never have to choose between them again. That’s a tall order, but at least these fritters of fluffy seafood dough exist here.

Cod & Chips

It’s a familiar tale—fried fish batter so tasteless that the tartar is mandatory to season it. Not here. The cod dredge has a blend of salt, pepper, and other good stuff, flavoring the fish so well that it doesn’t need a dip. Though, Emerald City’s spicy tartar sauce is so good that you’ll get the best of both worlds. As far as fries go, theirs have an ideal thickness and crisp bite (and also should be dunked).
