“Tipunan in East Oakland makes Filipino comfort food, like lumpia shanghai, nilaga, kare kare, spaghetti with hot dog slices, and breakfast all day (lots of tapsilog here). Everything is great, but what I loved most about my recent takeout order was the turon. It’s a Filipino snack and dessert made with a slice of saba (a kind of banana), which is then rolled in a lumpia wrapper, fried, dusted with sugar, and served warm. Tipunan’s version includes jackfruit, which adds to the natural sweetness of this treat. You only get one turon in an order, so do yourself a favor and get two or three.”
