The Bird
This casual counter-service spot in SoMa has an excellent fried chicken sandwich that’s loaded with pickles, mayo, and sweet apple slaw. It comes in two ways: classic or spicy. Both forms are delicious, and the bright red spicy version packs some serious heat. Get a side of curly fries and some freshly-fried apple fritters for dessert, and enjoy it all somewhere sunny.
Food Rundown
Fried Chicken Sandwich
This is one of the best fried chicken sandwiches in SF. You can get it regular or dipped in a bright red spicy sauce—it’s really just about personal preference as both versions are fantastic. The sandwich comes with a huge chicken thigh and housemade apple slaw that cools off your tongue after every bite.
Curly Fries
There aren’t nearly enough places in the city that serve curly fries. But luckily, The Bird fills that hole. Always get some of these on the side.
Apple Fritters
Sometimes at night, we count The Bird’s apple fritters instead of sheep. The glazed, donut hole-sized bites have little chunks of apple baked in. Absolutely grab a few to go.
