Squabisch Pretzels
We’ve never waited in a line stretching down the block for a German pretzel. That’s because spots like Squabisch have never existed in the area—until now. The Berkeley bakery specializes in Swabian-style pretzels, which are as perfect as pretzels can get. Characteristics of this soft, chewy bread we’ll always make time to line up for: uneven thickness, thin arms, and fluffy bellies that get coated with sweet and savory toppings like salted caramel, cranberries, and melted asiago cheese. In other words, these pretzels practically grin at you. The rotating menu includes standbys like the bratwurst-stuffed pretzel, and the cheddar with jalapeño, plus a handful of specials. Get one of everything, then pop these beauties in the oven when you get home—they’re better slightly warm.
