Whenever Inglourious Basterds rotates back onto Netflix, two things happen: we watch it immediately and then we go have a few beers at La Trappe in North because it’s almost an exact replica of the basement bar where the rendezvous scene takes place. Just like in the movie, you take a spiral staircase down into a windowless brick room that’s somehow always empty except for a few employees and one person off to the side drinking a beer. There are a bunch of tables to choose from and each feels isolated from the others, backing up further into the cavern you’re in and perfect for having a quiet conversation with a small group.

They do serve food here, including a pretty good burger and great fries with homemade sauces like curry ketchup, but you’re not really here to eat, and if you are, prepare for the service to be slow even if you’re the only people there. What you’re really here to do, aside from crack a few inevitable Hugo Stiglitz jokes, is drink because La Trappe has one of the longest beer lists in the city, and pretty much everything on it is something your beer-obsessed coworker scours random liquor stores for in their spare time. Come here when you’ve got some time to kill and try a few Saisons, double IPAs, and doppelbocks before going home and watching Django just to round out your day.
