Eating while watching a sports game usually involves nachos and wings. But who says it can't also involve fried tofu and pad see ew?
It's time to introduce you to a hidden gem: King of Thai in North Beach. The place looks like an Irish pub from the outside (and kind of on the inside too) but serves respectable Thai food and almost irresponsibly cheap beer.
When you're at King of Thai, you'll want to head upstairs, where tons of TVs and standing tables make for a fun spot to get your crew together to watch sports. The downstairs has some weird vibes, so we’d recommend moving on up. When you get there, plan to fill up on cheap eats and to drink draft beers that ring in at under $3 no matter what time of day it is. We don’t get it either.
The plethora of TVs and crazy cheap beer are the main draw, but the food is pretty decent too. The service is very authentically Thai, as in English-isn’t-an-option, point-at-the-menu style, but orders always seem to turn out right and beer always shows up. Sometimes more than you ordered, but this is not something we tend to complain about. We would probably have ordered another pitcher or cup or enormous tower/funnel/spigot anyway.
King of Thai is not a place you come primarily for the food, but when you're drinking practically free beer and watching the game you will want food, and you might as well eat something a little more interesting than nachos every now and then. If you're a Thai food snob, then you can just fill up on some of the free popcorn. Since they have that too.
This might be our favorite thing here - a heaping pile of fried tofu triangles, with a standard sweet and sour sauce. They’re light and crispy on the outside and soft inside. Weirdly addictive.
As you would expect, four grilled sticks of chicken with peanut sauce. Nothing to write home about but decent, and it’s fun to eat things on sticks.
Garlic Chicken Wings
Delicious sauce, messy awesome wings. Get involved.
Pad See Ew
We usually go with the chicken, and it’s generally always tasty and exactly what you expect from pad see ew. A favorite all around.
The most creative thing on the menu, and better than we expected.
Any dish involving spaghetti
We don’t know? It’s in North Beach so maybe it’s a rule they have to keep this on the menu.
