Even if you’re not the biggest fan of astrology, there’s no denying its cultural significance. Personally, I love astrology memes more than actual horoscopes themselves, but I’m also not above asking for someone’s exact birth date and time to find their birth chart. As we enter what I like to call “fake fall,” when kids are back in school but the weather is still annoyingly sticky and hot, we also enter Virgo season, when all the most meticulous, determined, and passionate people you know were likely born.
When I tell people that I’m a Virgo, they tend to nod and say, “That makes sense.” And while astrology isn’t an exact science (or science at all), I do feel seen by the sign’s signature traits. We’re hyper-organized, can come off as a little judgemental, and thrive in high-pressure situations.
So what do you do when you need a birthday gift for a Virgo who's extremely picky, organized, and generally will prefer to do it themselves? Forget something sentimental, that'll just sit on a shelf and gather dust. Thinking practically and choose something they'll use every day.
If the Virgo in your life loves cooking at home, I’ve done all the heavy lifting and found all the best home and kitchen items that will not only appeal to their pragmatic sensibility, but also will earn you tons of friendship kudos. And if you know me IRL, consider this a wishlist for my upcoming birthday.

A Groovy Cutting Board
This cutting board could easily double as a wall-hanging or crucial piece of countertop decor. The unprinted wood surface can be used for food prep, while the patterned surface easily lets visitors know (read: warns) that they’ve entered a Virgo household.
For The Meal-Planner
Virgos are known for their love of organization and planning, so they’ll appreciate this meal planning notepad. It’s magnetic, so they can conveniently stick it on their fridge to plan out the next trip to Trader Joe’s.
For the Virgo Who Loves Pantry Organization
In my not-at-all scientific assessment, the venn diagram of people who enjoy aesthetic pantry organization and people who are Virgos is more or less a circle. These clear OXO containers are perfect for storing dry ingredients like flour and sugar, and as an additional plus your favorite Virgo can probably farm out some good TikTok content whenever they restock the jars.
If They Micromanage Your Drinks On Their Furniture
Virgos perfectionist tendencies typically make them great hosts, with the exception that they might freak out a bit if you leave a sweaty glass unattended. These soft wool coasters will alleviate their stress whenever they host, and can be mixed and matched with any decor.
If They Multitask Constantly In The Kitchen
I’m not sure if it’s because I’m a Virgo or because I have some form of undiagnosed ADHD, but you can typically find me trying to do 17 different things at once when I’m in the kitchen. This Echo Show allows me to look up YouTube cooking videos for inspiration or step-by-step demonstrations for trussing a chicken, plays music for establishing optimal cooking vibes, and lets me set timers for individual ingredients as they roast. Plus, it’s handy for verbally confirming unit conversions when your hands are full or otherwise unable to pick up a phone. If things are truly dire as you’re attempting to cook, you can even use it to call a friend or relative for helpful recipe tips, or even just to lend some moral support.
If They’re Not Afraid to Get A Little Messy
If your resident Virgo is into cooking or baking at home, odds are that they may make a mess from time to time. If they haven’t already invested in a durable, yet chic apron that can spare their clothes from clouds of four dust or an unexpected splash of tomato sauce, this one is an industry favorite. I especially like the sunny tone of this egg yolk colored apron, which serves as a pop of color among neutral kitchen linens or adds even more brightness to a maximalist kitchen decor approach.
For Friendly Virgos
Not all Virgos are extroverts, but for those of us that are, we’re likely to make friends in the most unexpected places. For those types, give them an adorable and practical lighter like this one from Tsubota Pearl ensures that we’re always prepared when someone asks for a light.
For The Virgo Who Loves Game Night
I’m a huge proponent of games that not only serve as the catalyst for future dinner party stories, but also don’t look cluttered on a shelf or coffee table when not in use. This elevated domino set with a jewel-toned case fulfills both of their requirements, and the dominos themselves are made with recycled materials.
If They Want To Display Their (Superior) Sign
If your Virgo friend is proud of their astrological brethren (as they should be), this wall art is a subtle way for them to display their sun sign pride in any room they choose. The prints are created by Brooklyn-based artist Danielle Kroll, and you can choose from any sign to honor someone’s entire birth chart, or to include your favorite Virgo’s partner or friends.
For Lazy Cold Brew Enthusiasts
One prevailing stereotype among Virgos is that they exude type-A energy, so if you’re looking for an easy birthday gift for the coffee drinking Virgo in your life, this ultra-strong coffee concentrate from Jot is a solid bet. I can make a decent-tasting cup of cold brew while still half-asleep. You could also gift it to a Virgo who has a penchant for Espresso Martinis.
Or Hyper-Focused Pour-Over Lovers
If you’re buying a gift for someone more, ahem, particular about their coffee, they’ll appreciate this barista approved electric kettle. The gooseneck spout will give them plenty of control while achieving the optimal pour-over bloom, and the matte navy finish is sure to look great on their counter or coffee bar.
For The Virgo Who Is Already Planning Their 2023 Travel
Virgos are the type to already have a go-to carry on or weekender bag, but you can help them prep for their next trip by gifting this “wow they thought of everything” travel kit from Aesop. The set comes with shampoo, conditioner, body cleanser, and tons of other skincare essentials (I’m obsessed with the ultra-rich body balm that puts regular travel-sized lotion to shame). An additional bonus: everything is small enough to pack into your carry on without it being snagged by TSA.
If They Hate Lukewarm Coffee
Some people may call Virgos micromanagers or demanding, but I say there’s nothing wrong with knowing what you want and asking for it. In this case, your loved one may prefer their coffee at an exact temperature, and detest anything less than a piping hot cup of joe. You can adjust the warmth of your coffee with this mug down to the degree (measured in Fahrenheit), and can keep your drink warm up to 1.5 hours on its own or all day on its included charging base.
For the Virgo Who Goes All-Out At Potlucks
If you’re looking for a birthday gift for the type of person who puts out an elaborate charcuterie spread with ease, they probably also have a killer potluck game. This canvas travel tote from San Francisco-based àplat will make it even easier for them to transport still-warm dutch ovens or casseroles to their next kickback. The large canvas handles make it a breeze to hold a heavy cast iron dish to your destination, and the bag comes in six fun accent colors.
A Practical (Yet Chic) Birthday Gift
As a Virgo myself, I tend to want the best things in life (especially coffee), but I also enjoy the process of exploring new items in search of The Very Best. I’m grateful that I get to test out plenty of great coffee products as part of my job description, but for Virgos who don’t do that for a living, Driftaway’s subscription offers the next best thing. You can gift single bags or a subscription of ground or whole bean coffee, and there’s even a virtual tasting party option that allows the recipient to blindly taste test each blend before learning more about its tasting notes and origins.
If They’re Into Baking
It’s hard to give baking items to avid bakers, because they likely already have basic accessories like whisks, bench scrapers, and mixing bowls. But if the Virgo in your life has turned their quarantine fascination with sourdough into a full blown hobby, this dough riser is probably something they’ve yet to buy for themselves. The best part: they’ll avoid any pre-heating oven disasters by giving their dough a dedicated space to proof (we’ve all been there).
For Green Thumb Virgos
If you’re looking for the perfect gift for someone who’s a proud plant parent and cooking enthusiasts, this seed kit will help them grow edible herbs or flowers right in their garden. The herb seed kit includes staples like basil, thyme, and sage, while the flowers would all pop on a baked treat or TikTok-ready cocktail.
