Not all plant-based foods are created equal. For example, even though pre-packaged ramen noodles and Absolut vodka are technically vegan, that still doesn’t mean you should be mixing them for dinner (although we wouldn’t judge you if you did). So whether you’re a vegetarian, vegan, freegan, flexitarian, or just watched What The Health in quarantine, here are 10 (very good) vegetarian and vegan options for takeout and delivery.
Seven days a week from 3-9pm, 20th Street Pizza is offering their vegan pies made with cashew mozzarella and toppings like spicy pistachio pesto, locally grown mushrooms, and vegan sausage. Place an order for delivery or curbside delivery here.
Abyssinia, an Ethiopian spot right around the corner from Penn’s campus, has a lot of different vegetarian dishes. Your best bet is the $10 vegetarian combination, which includes six of their most popular vegetarian dishes - like split lentils in berbere sauce and spicy, sauteed collard greens - all served on top of spongy injera bread. You can probably split one plate between two or three people because the servings are so big, or just get one for yourself and have some leftovers. They’re currently offering takeout by phone at 215-387-2424 or delivery if you order through third-party apps.
For a vegetarian or vegan brunch, Ants Pants is one of your best options. They have everything from avocado toast to a spicy tofu scramble, and they do delivery or takeout by calling either of their locations ahead of time.
If you’ve been surviving off of mediocre grocery store hummus for the entirety of quarantine, then your first action after reading this guide should be to buy a pint (or two) of the city’s best hummus from Dizengoff. The Israeli shop from the Zahav team is doing a shortened menu of hummus pints and platters, which come with chopped salad, pickles, and warm, fluffy pita. Their preorders open every Monday and Wednesday at 8am for Tuesday and Thursday pickups, and you can place your order on their website.
While most of the places on this list have kind of healthy, vegetable-centric dishes, sometimes you just need something that’s a little bad for you. That’s where Dottie’s comes in. This vegan donut shop in West Philly is doing takeout boxes with a mix of whatever flavors they’re doing that day, which could include from boston creme, dunkaroo, or lemon poppy. Goldie is the fast-casual falafel shop from the people behind Zahav, and they’re currently doing pickup at their Center City location every Wednesday and Friday. All of the options on their short menu - which along with falafel, has fries and tehina shakes - are vegan. Everything’s great, but what you want to focus on is the falafel. It’s flavorful and crispy, and you can get it on a platter or in a sandwich with a few different sauces. If you’re extra hungry or just want to stock up while their orders are still open, their tehina milkshakes are so good that you’ll wonder why they even make milk-based ones anymore. Call Hardena, an Indonesian spot in South Philly, to place an order for curbside pickup and, if they have it, get your rice plate with the tempeh and vegetables in a sweet soy sauce. There are other great vegan and vegetarian dishes here as well, like the collard greens and egg and tofu curry, but make sure to check their daily menu on Instagram before calling (215-271-9442) to order.

The noodle and rice bowls are our favorites, especially when you top them with things like veggie curry, marinated shredded coconut, or curry jackfruit. And the Indonesian salads they have, like the gado gado with steamed vegetables, fried tempeh, peanuts, and a sweet vinaigrette, are great for when you want something on the lighter side.
