They aren’t the trendiest Mexican spots anymore, but we’re still fans of the various Toloache locations around town. They do semi-upscale Mexican food, with things like lobster tacos, steak, various ceviches, and (for some reason) miso black cod. This location on 82nd has a particularly nice backyard, and it works well for an outdoor brunch or a warm-weather date night.

With its downtown vibe and solid menu, The East Pole is exactly the youthful shot in the arm the Upper East Side needed.
Earl’s Beer & Cheese
Earl’s menu of pig and cheese heavy snacks pairs perfectly with the small but righteous selection of draft beers that they have on tap. Head up north sometime to check it out, and also visit Earl’s sister restaurant around the corner, ABV.

Jajaja is a vegan Mexican restaurant on the LES. Is it the best Mexican in the city? No. But if you’re a vegan, you’ll probably be into it.
Lalito is a Mexican-ish spot in Chinatown, with a funky menu and good vibes. Hit it for dinner, or even lunch if you’re on jury duty.
Quick, specialty fast foods are something lower Manhattan now thrives on, and Tortaria deserves to be mentioned alongside their fellow low-cost, high-reward brethren. There’s a Mexican sandwich and a taquito for every palate.
