The fact that you occasionally eat Cinnamon Toast Crunch for dinner and use a garbage bag for a laundry hamper may come up eventually. But for now, you’re trying to convey that you’re a classy person who likes classy things. There’s no better way to do that than with Champagne. You’ll find a lot of it at The Riddler, a West Village bar where the menu includes over 150 Champagnes as well as some food options - like an excellent sauce-heavy burger. The space is small and there’s very little room to stand, so make a reservation, and if you feel like letting the real you show at any point in the night, ask your server for a Chambong, which is available off-menu.
For a place that specializes in such a particular beverage (champagne), The Riddler works for a remarkable amount of situations. So while you could totally celebrate a special occasion with caviar and $100 bottles of bubbles here, you could just as happily eat a burger by yourself at the bar, or participate in the ancient art of the chambong. If you don’t know what that is, educate yourself at The Riddler or with a few choice Google results.
While we were drinking from a Chambong at The Riddler in the West Village, the couple at the table over stared at us, so transfixed by what they were seeing that they forgot they were holding shrimp cocktail in midair. Whether you want to have a classy evening involving raw bar and several glasses of Champagne, or debauchery by way of Chambong and glasses of wine filled to the literal brim, you’ll have a good time at this Champagne bar in the West Village. Just be sure to order the raclette burger and to make a reservation - the space is small and there’s very little room for walk-ins.
