Red Hat

Once the weather turns warm, getting out of the city is a necessity. Here's a good idea for a day trip - lunch at Red Hat in Irvington. Located on the Hudson River, close to the Tappen Zee Bridge, the view, with the faint outline of the NYC skyline visible looking south and bridge upon you to the north, is worth the quick trip. It's actually easier to get here than it is most parts of Brooklyn. A 45 minute straight shot on the Metro North out of Grand Central, Red Hat is steps away from the Irvington train station. No car necessary. Oh, and the food ain't bad either.

Dine alfresco and enjoy one of the better waterside dining experiences available in the tri-state area. Red Hat's seasonal menu of French bistro classics and New American cuisine focuses on local, sustainably farmed organic ingredients. We were impressed with the freshness of each dish, specifically the cod and the lamb shank that featured incredible colors and flavor combinations.

Just because all your non-Brooklyn married friends go to Westchester to pop out kids and officially waive the red flag, you shouldn't be scared off. There are some good eats in suburbia.

House-Made Spring Gnocchi
Oof, this gnocchi was a hot mess. Way too soft and doughy, it almost tasted like it was raw and uncooked. On paper, it sounded like a slam dunk - "sheep's milk ricotta gnocchi with asparagus, shiitake mushrooms and an English pea and mint puree." Unfortunately, it was the complete opposite. #GnocchiFailCrispy Peekytoe Crabcake
Grandma from Grandmas On The Town ordered the crab cake and she was plenty satisfied. There's not much to be mad about a big fat crab cake with wasabi and lime remoulade.House-Made Rillettes
Triangle rillettes of duck and pork confit, served cold, like a pâté with a field greens salad, pickled red onions and an excellent green peppercorn mustard. Good times right here .Pan-Roasted "Line Caught" Atlantic Cod
The cod was cooked beautifully and the additional flavors brought on by the onion fondue and fried capers worked quite well. Throw in some braised artichoke hearts and sauteed spinach and you have one really impressive dish.Slow Braised Colorado Lamb Shank
Check this baby out and see for yourself how incredible this looks. The melt in your mouth shank is served in a bowl with rosemary lamb jus adding a ton of flavor to the surrounding role players of english pea risotto, peas, carrots and onions. Phenomenal work, you need to eat this.Classic Grilled Hanger Steak Frites
A fixture on the Red Hat menu, this steak frites competes with Raoul's in terms of quality. Go with the red wine sauce and don't even think about asking for a different side than fries. These fries are sick (in a good way).Lingune and Ramps
Grandma was unimpressed with ramps, which she had never had before and therefore didn't care much for this pasta. I, on the other hand, found it quite enjoyable. Better to split as an app, than get as your main. Grilled ramps joined pancetta, balsamic glazed red onion, bread crumbs and parmigiano in lemon-roasted garlic butter. Tasty.Dessert
We sampled the Key Lime Pie with graham cookie crust and fresh whipped cream, the Profiterole and the Classic Ice Cream Sundae. They ended the meal well, but weren't exactly memorable sweets.

Food Rundown

Red Hat Salad

A well conceptualized salad of romaine and bibb lettuce, watermelon radish, green apple, gruyere cheese with a delicious three vinegar vinaigrette. Get it.
