The Best Oyster Happy Hours In NYC

PHOTOS: Noah Devereaux

We love oysters. A lot. But they're expensive. The key is to get them when they won't break the bank. So make up an excuse to leave work early for happy hour, or spend your weekends day drinking and doing some slurping.

Here are our favorite places to do just that in NYC, just updated for Summer 2016.

The Spots

The Deal: All Oysters $1.25

When: Monday-Friday 4-7pm, Saturday: 11am-1pm

Maison Premiere’s oyster happy hour is arguably the best in NYC. They have an incredible amount of options, and they’re all $1.25. It’s like Christmas up in here, daily. Get there early, because people are on to how good this situation is, especially when it’s nice out and you can sit in their amazing outdoor garden.

The Wayland

700 E 9th St

The Deal:$1 oysters, $5 oyster shooters, discounted drinks

When: Monday-Friday, 4-7pm

The Wayland is the ultimate all-purpose bar. You can use it for first dates, after-work hangs, and rowdy Saturday night drinking. But you should also be using it for weekday happy hour, when they serve $1 oysters and have discounts on their excellent cocktails.

The Deal: $1 Oysters

When: Daily, 5-7pm

If you’re looking to eat delicious food and hang out in the mid-50’s on the east side, there’s no better place to do it than Crave Fishbar. The menu is filled with seafood hits, but the oyster happy hour is particularly excellent as ALL their assorted oysters are $1.

The Deal: $1 Oysters, $1 Littlenecks, $5 Beers

When: Monday-Friday, 2-6pm

We love this place for lobster rolls and fish tacos, we love it for grabbing a nice piece of fish to cook at home, and we love it for oyster happy hour. You can always count on Greenpoint Fish & Lobster's selection to be awesome, and that four-hour window means you have plenty of time to get your fill.

145 Borinquen Pl

Lighthouse is a place where everything seems to move at a slower pace. The vibe is incredibly laid-back, it's never too busy, and the happy hour wine price applies to whatever bottle is open. (Go ahead and stay for dinner too - the entire menu here is awesome.)

The Deal: $1 oysters, $7 Wines by the Glass/$25 Bottles

When: Tuesday-Sunday, until 7:30pm (closed Mondays)

The Deal: $1 Oysters

When: Weekdays 5-7pm, Weekends 3-7pm

A lower, Lower East Side staple for more than a decade now, The Ten Bells is one of those bars that’s always a good time. It has a ton of character, is filled with regulars, and has way better food than a poppin’ wine bar in this part of town really needs to have. On top of that, they serve $1 oysters during happy hour.

The Deal: $1.50 Oysters

When: Monday-Friday, 4-6pm

Jeffrey’s Grocery is a classic West Village neighborhood spot with an excellent raw bar and a whole lot of feel good factor. The latter is amplified during happy hour, when you can take advantage of $1.50 oysters.

St. Mazie

345 Grand St

The Deal: $1.50 Oysters

When: Monday-Friday 6-8pm, Weekends 5-7pm

St. Mazie has become one of our favorite bars in Williamsburg. It has a fun, retro vibe (without feeling kitschy), it has a highly pleasant back patio, and it has great live music most nights. Hit it during happy hour to take advantage of all of the above plus $1.50 oysters. (And if you’re still hungry afterward, you can always walk directly across to Emmy Squared for pizza.)

The Deal: With Purchase of 2 Drinks, $1.25 Blue Point Oysters & $2.50 West Coast Oysters

When: All Day, Every Day

Most oyster happy hours are early, but not in Hell’s Kitchen. White Oak Oyster Bar has got a $1 deal all day if you buy a couple of drinks, which, obviously, you will. Next time you’re leaving Terminal 5 after a show and you’re like, “WHAT NOW?” you know where to go.

The Deal: $1 Oysters

When: Monday-Thursday 5-7pm, Friday-Sunday 4-7pm

A funky cocktail bar that looks more like an art studio than it does oyster bar, Sel Rrose is a super cool space with decent food and an excellent oyster happy hour daily from 5-7pm. The oyster specials are always changing, and they have a lot of different options. If you work in the Soho/Nolita/Chinatown area, this is a great spot to have on the radar.

The Deal: Half-Dozen Oysters & A Beer For $12

When: Daily, 5-7pm

For quality per dollar, Upstate Oyster Bar’s $12, 6 oyster + 1 beer deal is tough to beat. On the outside, it may not seem like much, but trust us, this is where the aficionados go. Upstate gets their oysters fresh daily, and the special includes whatever is just coming in off the boat. This is the ultimate neighborhood restaurant - if you’ve never been, you are doing yourself a disservice.

The Deal: $1 Oysters, 3 for $4 Fried Clams, 3 for $5 Fried Oysters

When: Daily, 5-7pm

From the people behind Upstate, Edwin & Neal’s is another great, low-key spot for getting serious with sea meats. Their happy hour isn’t just one of the best in terms of quality - it’s also one that you could easily show up to in your gym clothes. Because nothing is better than downing oysters in stretchy pants.

The Deal: $1.25 Blue Point Oysters

When: Monday-Wednesday 4:30-7pm, Saturday 1-5pm

For Grand Central commuters workers, it doesn’t get more convenient than one of the oldest, most storied restaurants in NYC. Grand Central Oyster Bar has one of the biggest daily selection of oysters anywhere in NYC. Unfortunately, Blue Points are the only raw oyster on special, but you can definitely do worse than $1.25 for the local goods.

25 Bogart St.

The Deal: $1 Oysters (by the dozen)

When: Monday-Saturday 4-8pm, Sunday 4pm-12am

This Bushwick space has a bar, a restaurant in the front, a party time clubhouse with DJs in the back, and a killer oyster deal daily. When you’re partying in Bushwick, kick things off with oysters at Tutu’s.

28 Greenwich Ave

The Deal: $1 Oysters

When: Daily, 4pm-12am

No reservations, no phone number, lots of oysters, lots of wine. Virgola is a small Italian wine bar you’ve probably never heard of until now. They have $1 oysters all day, and it’s a great place to go on a casual date, or just hang at the bar by yourself and potentially end up on a casual date with a stranger. They also make a killer negroni.

The Deal: $1.50 Oysters

When: Daily, 5:30-7pm

The Leadbelly certainly isn’t one of the best deals in town, considering their window of opportunity for discounted oysters is only 90 minutes long. However, there aren’t many arenas better for oyster shooting in NYC. We love this place. It’s the ideal post-work hang for when you don’t want to commit to a full meal. Have a drink, eat some oysters, look at pretty people, and listen to some live music, which they feature frequently.

East Village
122 E. 7th St.

The Deal: $1 Oysters

When: Daily, 6-8pm (and All Day Sunday & Monday)

Desnuda is one of those constantly overlooked restaurants that deserves some love. They also smoke oysters with a gravity bong, which is not part of the deal, but definitely something you need to partake in.

Grand Army

336 State St

The Deal: $1 Oysters

When: Weekdays, 5-7pm

If you work or live near downtown Brooklyn, pay attention. Grand Army’s oyster and cocktail situation needs to be on your radar. The drinks are good, and their food focus is raw bar. They serve up $1 oysters Monday-Friday, so go hang and take a load off.

The Deal: $2 Oysters

When: Monday-Friday 5-7pm, Weekends 12-3pm

There aren’t many pleasurable things in the Penn Station/Herald Square nexus from hell, so The John Dory Oyster Bar is a glorious escape from the reality of a couple blocks north. Whether you’re fleeing that area or work in Nomad/Flatiron, The John Dory is our favorite place to hang out in this part of town. They may not have the cheapest oyster deal, at $2 a pop, but they also offer more than just Blue Points.

1433 Bedford Ave

The Deal: $1 Oysters (by the half or full dozen)

When: Daily, 4:30-7:30

Over in Crown Heights, Catfish is a little slice of New Orleans: cajun food, strong cocktails, a comfortable space, and good vibes all around. If you haven’t made your way there yet, their oyster happy hour - which lasts a generous three hours every day and features a rotating selection - is an especially good time to do it.

The Deal: $1 Oysters

When: Monday-Tuesday All Day

Brooklyn Crab is an NYC anomaly. The rickety, beach-themed, indoor/outdoor bar and restaurant looks like it belongs on a boardwalk, in the sand, or on a dock. Mondays and Tuesdays are great days to head to Red Hook, eat a bucket of crabs, and chow down on $1 oysters. Maybe play in the sand or shoot a round of mini golf while you’re at it.
