The New “Three Strikes and You’re Closed” Policy For NYC Bars and Restaurants

As of July 16th, New York state will enforce a three-strike policy for restaurants and bars who violate social distancing and mask mandates.

July 16th, 2020

In a press conference on Thursday, Governor Cuomo announced a new “Three Strikes and You’re Closed” policy for bars and restaurants that violate state social distancing and face covering mandates. He also said, “Egregious violations can still result in an immediate loss of a liquor license.” The Governor cited a significant rise in complaints in the NYC region since restaurants and bars reopened for outdoor dining on June 22nd, and he’s encouraging anyone who sees violations to report them to the State Liquor Authority .

Additionally, the Governor said restaurants and bars “must only serve alcohol to people who are also ordering food,” which reinstates a policy that was put in place back in March when bars and restaurants began serving takeout cocktails. We wrote more about this change here.
