Mission Chinese’s Manhattan Location To Close At The End Of September
Mission Chinese’s owner, Danny Bowien, cites pandemic-related business challenges as the reason for the closure.

After seven years, Mission Chinese will close its East Broadway location at the end of September.

In an Instagram post on Thursday, the restaurant’s owner Danny Bowien cited pandemic-related challenges. “We have had to fight to save our businesses and jobs while making the case for our very existence. We all desperately want restaurants to open - to really open - but cannot insist on this out of obligation, without regard to the health of our customers and our employees.”

Mission Chinese will continue to operate a limited takeout and pre-prepared meal kit service at their Bushwick location, which opened back in 2018.

For years, Mission Chinese’s Manhattan location has attracted crowds (us included) for thrice-cooked bacon and rice cakes, kung pao pastrami, and numbing fried chicken. Their two-floor space, glowing lights, and loud music felt more like showing up at a party and less like a dinner where you talk about your job and your new indoor herb garden. The closing of Mission Chinese’s Manhattan location (and the pivot of their business model in Bushwick) reflects the end of an NYC dining era. Mission Chinese, you will be missed.
