El Comal
East Hollywood’s El Comal is exactly where you should go when you feel like you got pummeled by a steamroller and are in need of some hearty soup to patch you up. This strip mall restaurant makes particularly good chicken and beef caldos, which come filled to the brim with meat and big chunks of carrot, potato, corn, and zucchini squash. The broths are deliciously salty, fatty, and full of flavor from roasted vegetables, cilantro, and oregano. Weekends here also happen to include a spicy menudo with pigs’ feet and some very good pozole rojo. The pozole has a rich, cloudy red broth that has us wondering why we spent so much money on overpriced bone broth back in 2019. All of the pork’s meat and bones release their nutrients and natural flavors to create this chile-infused soup that has some acid, some salt, and a lingering heat that you won’t feel until your upper respiratory system decides to purge itself.
