Fresh off a successful run at Smorgasburg, Ethiopian chef Tezeta Alemayehu just opened a new brick-and-mortar restaurant in Santa Monica. Berbere specializes in vegan food that’s inspired by African cuisine but isn’t necessarily traditional. Based on dishes Alemayehu makes at home, she’s serving a rosemary root salad studded with celery, avocado toast with an almond berbere spread, and shiro, or clay pot garbanzo stew. Plus, all of the spices are made in-house.
