Sonoratown Is Opening A Second Location + 2 New Tacos To Try This Week

April’s LA taco update.

We get asked from readers on a daily basis where they should be eating tacos in LA, and Sonoratown is always on our shortlist. The Downtown taqueria specializes in tacos found in owner Teodoro Diaz-Rodriguez Jr.’s hometown of San Luiz Rio Colorado, Sonora. Here the carne asada is mesquite-grilled and the handmade flour tortillas are translucent, slightly sweet, and made with lard. Plain and simple, these are some of the best tacos you’ll find in LA, and that’s not a secret to anybody at this point.

Even amidst a pandemic, lines regularly snake out the door at their Downtown Fashion District location, filled with people looking to score some of their incredible Sonoran-style tacos, burritos, and chivichangas. Good news - a second location is on the horizon.

The new location, at 5610 San Vicente Blvd in Mid-City, means most Westsiders won’t even have to get on the 10 Freeway if they’re craving mesquite-grilled meats and some of the best flour tortillas on the entire planet. An official opening date has not been announced, but according to a report from Eater, we should hopefully expect something in the next six months. In the meantime, here are two new tacos you can try right now.

This new Mexican spot in the Arts District has a lot going for it. There’s an incredible rooftop patio with expansive views of Downtown, delicious cocktails, and a chile morita aioli-topped tuna tostada our brains cannot let go of. That said, you can’t leave Cha Cha Cha without getting involved with their tacos. There’s a dedicated taco section on the menu, and while the mushroomy hongos taco is a standout here, we recommend focusing on the steak pa’taquear down in the bigger dishes section. It’s essentially a $44 build-your-own taco station that comes with perfectly-charred New York strip steak, charred tomato, and red wine salsa, and is more than enough for two people.

Silver Lake’s latest addition is Playita, a new mariscos restaurant opened by the team behind Guisados. The tiny, order-at-the-window space on Sunset Blvd. has a shaded front patio and serves everything from shrimp aguachile to cheese quesadillas to mixed ceviche. When it comes to their tacos though, you can’t go wrong with the shrimp or fish. Both come perfectly beer-battered with a proper crunch on the outside, with moist, meaty interiors complemented by subtle heat from the pico de gallo and salsa roja on top. You can choose between flour or corn tortillas, and we recommend the chewy, translucent flour. Also, be sure to order a tomato-based campechana on your way out. It comes filled with crab, octopus, albacore, and shrimp, and is the ideal snack to have while walking around Sunset Junction.
