We’re well into July now, with temperatures consistently hitting 85° and our trusty AC wall units working overtime. Our brains are swirling with questions like “Have we gone to the beach enough?” and “Why didn’t Atlanta get more Emmy nominations?” We’re still awaiting the answers, but for now, we bring you this: 9 Exciting Things To Do & Eat Between July 13th-19th.
SUN'S OUT, (HOT DOG) BUNS OUT

The Waterfront in Venice—a sprawling neighborhood bar/cafe that’s been around since the mid-90s—just launched a weekly BBQ cookout in their beer garden. From now until the end of summer (whenever that is), they will be serving hot dogs, crab and lobster rolls, veggie burgers, and smashburgers in addition to their regular menu. It happens on Sundays from 12-4pm.
A CUBAN VIRTUAL COOKING CLASS

In collaboration with UCLA’s Fowler Museum, El Cochinito is teaching a virtual cooking class on Tuesday, July 19th at 5pm. Follow along with the Silver Lake pros as they make Cuba’s national dish, ropa vieja. There will be shredded meats, crispy plantain tostones with garlic sauce, and a whole lot more. RSVP here.
MEET, GREET, AND EAT WITH A RENOWNED AUTHOR

On Friday, July 15th, Post & Beam is hosting a Meet & Eat (get it?) with award-winning food writer and cookbook author, Nicole A. Taylor. She’s promoting her new book, Watermelons and Red Birds: A Cookbook for Juneteenth and Black Celebrations which contains over 75 soul food recipes. Tickets include a collaborative meal at the Baldwin Hills restaurant featuring dishes from the book.
CELEBRATE BASTILLE DAY

Since overthrowing the aristocracy sounds pretty good these days, consider celebrating Bastille Day on Thursday, July 14th at Tesse. The West Hollywood restaurant will be serving a special French prix-fixe menu, alongside a variety of French wines and cocktails. Expect country-style duck paté, lobster fat fries, grilled steaks, and chocolate soufflé. Tickets cost $65 per person.
ARCHITECTURE + FINE DINING

Dine in a house designed by Frank Gehry while eating Asian food? Say less. Han House is a new fine dining tasting menu experience that weaves through Korea, China, and Japan. It’s also located in an architectural and cultural landmark: a private home that was designed by the famed architect known for the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Guggenheim Museum, and his residence in Santa Monica. Tickets cost $250 per person.
AN INDONESIAN FOOD TRIFECTA

Our favorite multi-hyphenate, Mama’s Drive-By Kitchen (an organization that’s equal parts charity initiative, restaurant pop-up, and revolutionary delivery platform) just dropped the details on their latest event. It’s an impressive Indonesian dinner combo, with dishes sourced from Borneo Kalimantan Cuisine, Medan Kitchen, and Bungkus Bagus. Pick-ups will be held on Sunday, July 17th from 5:30-6:30pm at various points throughout the city.
BLUEBERRIES AT COURAGE BAGELS
Stay calm: Courage Bagels just dropped a new menu item. It’s a wild blueberry buckwheat bagel drizzled in a golden elixir made from three syrups (dark organic maple, apple cider, and sorghum). The syrup is produced by Ghetto Gastro, so if you’re not in the mood to navigate the intense lines at the Virgil Village walk-up window, you can always buy the syrup from their online shop and try to recreate it at home.
POP-UP ALERTS
La Morra

You’ll find La Morra and their signature sourdough pizzas at Voodoo Vin this Sunday, July 17th. While the Virgil Village bottle shop provides the wines, La Morra will handle the pizzas. Look for seasonal toppings like sungold tomatoes atop thick, charred, and bubbly crusts. Walk-ups only, no reservations.
Woon

Woon in Historic Filipinotown is hosting a pizza pop-up on Tuesday, July 19th from 5-9pm. The very cool Chinese restaurant is teaming up with Lucky Nick’s, a pizza pop-up known for their sourdough pies. There will also be natural wine courtesy of Pinkies Up and sick beats played by Hyans Collective.
Bang Bang Noodles

While their Highland Park and Culver City locations are temporarily closed, you can catch Bang Bang Noodles’ latest pop-up in the Arts District this week. They will, of course, have their signature noodles—hand-pulled to order and served with tingling spice—plus something new: Taiwanese beef rolls. The pop-up is open for lunch Thursday through Sunday from 12-4pm, and dinner Friday and Saturday from 4-9pm.
