Every lunchtime across Brazil, people flock to kilo restaurants, scooping from a wide array of dishes at a self-service buffet before paying by weight. This system has been transported successfully to Market Village in the Stratford Shopping Centre, where there’s a distinctly South American feel, with Colombian cafes and Brazilian delis drawing in streams of expats. Brazilian shopping centres are teeming with restaurants like this, so it’s comforting to see east London getting in on the act. It makes a welcome change from the chain-laden food courts across the road at Westfield. Dishes change daily, but expect silky feijoada with huge chunks of pork, feijão tropeiro (a drier dish of beans mixed with cassava flour and pork), and, if you’re in luck, tender chicken and okra stew.
