Technically, spring starts on the vernal equinox. But we’re not entirely sure what that means, so one glowing blossom tree, a 10-minute spell of sunshine, and the removal of a scarf is enough for us. There’s tonnes to eat and do in April too. From London marathon-inspired food crawls, to hot cross bun specials, to intelligent conversations on food (surrounded by great places to eat)—here are just a few ideas.
Ramadan is as much about eating as it is not eating, which is why these great London restaurants have specials on throughout Ramadan. But you can always look outside of set menus and iftar buffets. The Best Broasted—a Syrian broasted chicken specialist in Willesden Green—is halal and ideal for hungry groups, or head to Islington for a slap-up Cantonese feast at Hong Kong Restaurant. Two London food juggernauts in the shape of Jolene and Gelupo are joining forces to do what’s right: make pudding into a sandwich. Loosely inspired by Sicilian brioche con gelato but more likely just an excuse to put ice cream between bread, the collaboration will run from the 27th March until the 10th April. There’ll be a selection of 20 flavours to stuff in between a bun.

It’s Food Season at the British Library and that means there are a host of interesting speakers and topics, from Nigella Lawson on the sandwich to Andi Oliver on Caribbean stories across the diaspora. The talks start in mid-April and go all the way through to May. Check the calendar, buy tickets, and work out where you’re going to have lunch or dinner around King’s Cross.

If you think of each slice as a mile, then two at each venue will see you surpass those loafing runners.
