What’s that? Oh, it’s the sound of your self-esteem and social life returning as the weather finally leaves It’s Bloody Freezing territory. The denim jackets are out, everyone is optimistically wearing sunglasses, and we’re all pretending it was a good idea to leave our umbrellas at home. And this May, there are plenty of great things to try and, more importantly, eat. From a must-try new food hall to a breakfast burger collab that will cure that inevitable beer garden hangover, here’s what you shouldn’t miss this month.
Food halls can be deeply tragic places where the food is naff and you spend three hours playing Fight For a Table with a group of Aperol-wielding tourists. We hear you and we understand. But London, we have a new food hall and it’s cool, classy, and has some truly excellent food on offer. From the people behind Gymkhana, Hoppers, and Bao—Arcade Food Hall on New Oxford Street has everything from hefty sandwiches by Margot Henderson to winning Indonesian street food from Bebek! Bebek!. There’s also a sleek bar that’s perfect for a last-minute date as well as Flor’s must-try brown butter cakes available from the in-house deli.
Go To A Live Recording Of Table Manners
If you’re someone who loves food or just loves mother-daughter duos chatting about food, then chances are you listen to the Table Manners podcast. Having featured everyone from Paul McCartney to Dolly Parton, Jessie and Lennie Ware are taking their podcast on tour with two nights at none other than The London Palladium. On Sunday 8th May and Monday the 9th, you’ll be able to listen to the pair talk about all things food with special guests and of course, a whole lot of hilarity. Tickets start around the £30 mark but be sure to move quick, we have a feeling it’s going to sell out.
Celebrate The Weekend With Disco Nights (!) At Swift
Thursdays are the new Fridays, Wednesdays are the new Thursdays, and when Tuesdays become the new Wednesdays we will officially retire from public life. Until then, award-winning Soho cocktail bar Swift are bringing classic Big Weekend Energy with their new Disco Drinks events. Every Thursday and Friday throughout the month, they’ll have DJs pumping tunes, exclusive cocktails for £9, and the option to get three bevs for £20. Walk-ins are welcome but we’d recommend booking if you’re rolling with a group.
Hit Up The Yard Sale x Top Cuvée Collab
There is no denying that beer and pizza is the ultimate power couple but trust us, beer and natural wine is also mighty fine. This month, charming little wine bar Top Cuvée is joining forces with pizza legend Yard Sale for a Vin-Yard pop-up on Hackney Road. Expect expert sourdough pizzas, all the wine you could possibly want, and plenty of feel-good factor. If that doesn’t sound like your kind of thing—who hurt you?—know that Top Cuvée are also teaming up with Lucky & Joy on May 8th for a Chinese feast alongside, yup, more wine.
Try This Limited Edition Hash Brown Burger
Excuse us whilst we salivate and mumble ‘hash browns and red Leicester mother may I’ to ourselves but this burger collaboration really is quite the looker. A limited edition breakfast burger by Patty and Bun and stellar caf' Norman’s, they’ve created a special £12 mash-up involving orange yolked Clarence Court eggs, hash browns, beef patties, and of course, brown sauce. Available at all of the Patty and Buns across London and the proceeds will be going towards the Cook for Ukraine campaign. Oh and if you’re not into leaving the house before demolishing breakfast, know that it’s also available for delivery.
Book Your Tickets For Much Ado About Nothing
In our humble opinion, The Globe’s summer season is always the best time to experience some Shakespeare. This year they’re cracking out the jolly classic Much Ado About Nothing. A deeply relatable comedy about jealousy, love, and the endless perils of trying to set up your mates, you can get tickets for as little as £8 for the yard standing section. Want to head for dinner before or after? Our Bankside and Southwark guide can help with that.
Eat & Judge Croquetas
We’ve made entire careers out of being judgemental of croquetas and now it’s your turn. The Croquetas Challenge is returning to London this year, which means countless chefs from restaurants like Wright Brothers, London Shell Co, and Shuk will be battling to be crowned the champ of London croquetas. With the many heats taking place on the 10th, 17th, 24th, and 31st of May, tickets are £30 and spectators will be casting their votes alongside a panel of judges. Find all the intel on locations, participants, and the free welcome drinks here.
