By week four of Top Chef Texas, it was pretty obvious who had the best chance at taking it all. As long as Paul Qui's nerves didn't get in the way, this was his competition to win. And win he did, to the tune of nearly $200,000, a trip to Costa Rica, a new Prius and - insert sexy Padma voice here - the title of Top Chef.
If you didn't already know, Paul had a pretty good thing going before all of this Top Chef business. He's the chef at one of Austin's greatest and most nationally respected restaurants, Uchiko. He also seems like the kind of guy who'd be fun to party with, which is really the reason we asked him for a Fives. Food is cool and all, but let's be honest - this website is really just a way for us to make new drinking buddies.
Being that Paul is from Austin, we had him keep it local his Perfect For picks. Check out his list below, and next time you're in Austin, make sure to stop by Uchiko to have your mind blown or give his Asian inspired street food a shot at one of the East Side King trailers.
Paul's "Perfect For" Picks
The Liberty Bar (1618 1/2 E 6th St. / Austin, TX 78702) - "It's a friendly crew, the drinks are great, and the food at the trailer out back is awesome. Get the beet home fries and fried chicken."
Full On Pork Indulgence
Barley Swine (2024 S Lamar Blvd. / Austin, TX 78704) - "Bryce’s place is excellent. Great food, great atmosphere. He's got a cool wood burning grill, and pork is involved with a big portion of the menu."
Uchi or Uchicko (4200 N Lamar #140 / Austin, TX 78756) - "You get nothing but the freshest ingredients in town - we receive 4-5 fish deliveries from all around the world each week. The entire menu is stellar, but the secret is to get whatever is on the chalkboard. That’s where it’s at."
Alamo Drafthouse (1120 S Lamar Blvd. / Austin, TX 78704) - "Watch a movie while you drink buckets of beer and take shots of whiskey. Oh, and you can also order a full meal, or just snacks pending what you're in the mood for. The best part about this location of Alamo Draft House is that it’s right next to Highball, a new karaoke joint which doubles as a bowling alley and a full bar, with quality cocktails and good food."
Congress (200 Congress Ave. / Austin, TX 78701) - "When it comes to fine dining, Congress is one of the premiere meals in Austin. Both the wine list and the service is excellent."
