Alex Clare

Alex Clare

Who is Alex Clare, you ask? He's the owner of that song you haven't been able to get out of your head all summer, "Too Close." Fun facts: Alex is both a former chef and also former beau of the late Amy Winehouse, may she rest in peace. His debut album, The Lateness Of The Hour, is awesome. The London born, beard rocking singer and songwriter linked up with Major Lazer (Diplo & Switch) to produce the album and it's been in heavy rotation at Infatuation HQ since it's release back in May. When Alex's publicist suggested we do a Friday Fives, we happily obliged.

What we didn't realize going into this was that Clare is kosher, which makes his Friday Fives that much more unique. Being a touring artist is challenging, we can't imagine that there are a lot of kosher restaurants to choose from when one is in Houston, TX. However, Clare says he gets by, mainly thanks to a massive cooler he travels with that's always stocked with fresh fruits and veggies.

For his Friday Fives, we had Alex give us the best Kosher restaurants in the world, according to him. These are joints Alex feels ever us non-Kosher pig eaters would enjoy. Apparently we need to make a trip to Crown Heights to hit up Basil immediately.

Alex's "Perfect For" Picks

Basil Pizza & Wine Bar (270 Kingston Ave. / Brooklyn, NY 11213) - "My all time favorite restaurant is Basil in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Most Kosher restaurants you go into and you know it's kosher. The food is horrible, service sucks. With this one you’d never know. The food is phenomenal. The branzino salad, grilled fish on cold lettuce is fantastic. Basil ice cream. The thing I would order are the polenta fries, cut soft and fluffy in the middle, crispy on the outside."

Mexikosher (8832 W Pico Blvd. / Los Angeles, CA 90035) - "A deli-style counter with some plastic chairs and tables, just like all the other Mexican joints around LA. At Mexikosher, they do Carnitas that are absolutely mind blowing. They braise the beef and the duck for 18 hours or something, it's incredible."

Damn Good Steaks

Shiloh's (8939 W Pico Blvd. / Los Angeles, CA 90035) - "One of LA's most popular Kosher restaurants, Shiloh's is a modern-ish steakhouse with a huge menu. It’s a mixed crowd, a melting pot of all the different kinds of people LA has to offer. You can always bank on Shiloh's for some good People Watching and Celebrity Sightings. Last time I was there I had the sweetbreads, which were excellent and a melt in your mouth kobe beef steak."

Authentic Ethnic Eats

The White House Express (63 Brent St. / Hendon, London NW4 2EA, UK) - "This is my go-to spot when I'm home in London. Traditional Israeli food. Whenever I need takeout or to eat something quickly, this is where I go. My go-tos are the chicken soup to yemenite soup, shawarma and falafel."

Burgers Bar (Emek Refaim 20, Jerusalem) - "When I'm in Jerusalem, I love going to Burgers Bar. You can guess what they make here. All the burgers are made to order and they'll load up your burger with whatever you want, with the exception of cheese obviously. They do excellent fries as well."

Einstein's (St.-Jakobs-Platz 18 / 80331 Munchen, Deutschland) - "It may be in Germany, but Einstein's is probably the finest Kosher restaurant you can eat at outside of America. I go out of my way to come here whenever I can. It's a contemporary European style of food, but with traditional Jewish wrinkle. It's unique and incredibly delicious."
