What To Eat At The Staples Center

PHOTO: Philip Guerette

LA might have the Rose Bowl and the Coliseum and all the white wine boozing happening over at the Hollywood Bowl, but there arguably isn’t a more recognizable arena in the city than Staples. It is, after all, home to the Lakers, the Clippers, the Kings, the (world champion) Sparks, and The Grammy’s. Also, a lot of Adele concerts.

And while the surrounding area has more bars and restaurants than it knows what to do with, you have very little reason to go looking for food elsewhere. With big-name LA restaurants opening up on the main concourse, Staples’ food situation frankly puts other arenas to shame. So the next time you're gearing up for a concert or game, come ready to make the most of it. Here's our guide to everything you should be eating inside Staples Center.

The Original Fried Chicken Sandwich

There comes a point in every Lakers game where you wonder why you’re still there. Answer: Ludo Bird’s fried chicken sandwich. This thing is gigantic and admittedly a complete mess, but you’re never going to want it to end. The power move is to get involved with the sauces (throw some bearnaise and piquillo pepper sauce on top and live your best life), and even though they give you the option of dark or white meat, it’s truthfully not a choice. You’re going dark. Also, it never hurts when the chef is the guy behind Trois Mec, Petit Trois, and Trois Familia.

Patty Melt

Maybe your boss has the hookup or you’re simply one of those people who status-rages during sporting events, but you got seats on the premium concourse and you’re ready to eat everything in sight. Make moves for the patty melt. Smashed between two slices of marbled rye bread and doused with caramelized onions and all the cheese they could find, this is one of the better patty melts you’ll come across - and not just at a sports arena.

Churros

Kobe might be gone, but thankfully some of the best churros in LA are still around. Since opening their brick-and mortar only a few minutes from Staples, BS Taqueria has become one of LA’s best casual Mexican spots. But the fact they’re actually inside the arena now is a game-changer. So even when the Clippers eventually choke away the W, you’ll have these fluffy angels and chocolate sauce to dull the pain.

BBQ Chik'n Pizza

You’re at your first Kings Game and turns out when people have to skate on ice, the arena’s pretty cold. Hopefully you brought your most social-media-ready snuggie and enough money to get some BBQ chick’n pizza at Blaze. Not only will this thing warm you right up, it’s not so completely soaked in BBQ sauce you’ll want to die in your seat. Secret weapon: dough made in-house everyday and a sh*t ton of banana peppers thrown on top.

Carne Asada Tacos

What were we saying about BS Taqueria? Oh yeah - it’s the best. If you’re looking to get rowdy with some tacos at the Adele concert, the carne asada is as good as it gets. Massive chunks of steak, cherry tomatoes, and your choice of two different salsas, guac, or pico de gallo on top. Hello from the other side.

Roasted Poblano Chili Burger

Back up in the premium seats, turns out Disney On Ice was not the event to go all-in on a suite for, but you’re here so let’s make the most of it. The roasted poblano chili burger is excellent. The patty itself is massive, and whatever aioli they drench on top of it is completely fine in our books. No need to be scared off by the peppers, it’s not very spicy.

Three-Point Sliders

When you can’t stand to witness your team lose in person anymore, just walk to Draft Kings on the main concourse and watch a bunch of other people’s teams lose on TV instead. This place is as personality-less as sports bars get, but that doesn’t mean the food is bad. Case in point: the sliders. Topped with roasted tomatillo, chipotle guacamole, and queso fresco, these little guys are fantastic and a definite must-order.

Honey Lavender Biscuit

Your stoner roommate made you go to this weird Cirque du Soleil knockoff show with him, and you’re regretting it. But the edibles kicked in and the honey lavender biscuit at Ludo Bird is giving you the eyes. Covered in some sort of sexy honey situation, this thing is admittedly very sweet and falls apart easily, but you’re going to need it while staring at that 6’8” Finnish man in a leotard swivel around as he hangs by a curtain.

S'more Pies

Generally speaking, pre-packaged desserts tend to be a bummer. But the S’more pies over at Blaze have something to say about that. They aren’t huge and certainly aren’t the gooey campfire mess you’re envisioning, but they’re still delicious and very easy to eat while you aren’t caring about the basketball game your boyfriend brought you to.

Carnitas Tacos

Looking for something a little lighter and less spicy than the carne asada tacos? The carnitas at B.S Taqueria is your move. The pork is cooked perfectly and if you’re worried about two tacos not being enough, these babies are stacked. Also, just order more.

Mac N' Cheese Dog

There’s never been a baseball game inside of Staples before, but that won’t stop your hot dog urges from brimming to the surface while you’re there. At Dave’s Doghouse, you’re given a pretty wide selection to choose from, but the obvious move is the mac and cheese dog. Because it’s a hot dog. With mac and cheese on it. Also, those buns are tremendous (wink).

BBQ Chicken Wings

These things aren’t going to change your life, but when you’re in the mood for chicken wings at a hockey game, nothing will stop you. You’ve been warned though - create a safe perimeter, people will definitely mooch.

Brisket Sandwich

You hit the bar a little too hard before the game, and now the 3rd quarter is getting hazy. Time to soak up some regret with the BBQ brisket sandwich at Smokehouse. To put it simply, this thing is a monster, and if you’re able to finish it all by yourself, we respect and also worry for you.

Parmesan Tots

Eats is certainly that place in Staples that reads “basic concessions," and for all intents and purposes, that’s exactly what it is. But it also has a secret, and that secret is Parmesan Tots. One of god’s great foods is somehow made even better with a helping of parmesan across the top. Get involved.

Falafel Wrap

Carrie Underwood starts in 20 minutes, and you’re craving Mediterranean food. Get your mouth around the falafel wrap as soon as you can. The falafel itself is pretty good, but it’s the warm doughy pita that brings it all together. Also, it’s massive. Like Carrie’s star power.
