Murray Hill

You probably don't equate Murray Hill with good food. Actually, you probably don't equate Murray Hill with much other than adult dorms and dudes in baseball hats. But there's actually much more to this part of town than Brother Jimmy's and its most loyal customers.

Here are six places in Murray Hill that the people who live in this area know are awesome - but you probably don't.

Lamazou

Lamazou
370 3rd Ave.
New York, NY 10016
212-532-2009
Official Review

From the outside, Lamazou looks like little more than a cheese shop. But what you wouldn't know from walking by is that this place is home to some of the bombest sandwiches in town. The lines can be long during weekday lunch, but otherwise Lamazou is hardly known outside the neighborhood. Go pay husband and wife owners Aziz and Nancy a visit, and have them make you something custom.

Tanosi

Mexico Lindo
459 2nd Ave.
New York, NY 10010
212-679-3665
Official Review

Mexico Lindo is an upbeat, family run Mexican joint with really good food. You won't find six dollar tacos or "salsa flights" here, nor will you find pomegranate margaritas. This place is simple and straightforward, and that's why we love it. We also love it for the sweet flamenco guitar player that they have working the room from time to time. Olé.

Vezzo

Vezzo
178 Lexington Ave.
New York, NY 10016
212-839-8300
Official Website
Vezzo certainly isn't underrated amongst the people of Gramercy or Murray Hill - it's probably the best pizza in either neighborhood. If you don't live nearby, Vezzo probably isn't on your radar, but if you happen to be in the 'hood or find yourself in need of a casual pizza place that doesn't put brussels sprouts on their pies, this is a great option. Thin crust for life.

Garlic Pizza Bar

Garlic Pizza Bar
629 2nd Ave‎.
New York, NY 10016
646-559-9500
Official Website

Really good slice joints are few and far between, and Garlic Pizza Bar is our favorite in Murray Hill. They've got incredible grandma slices, a unique upside down slice, and probably the best buffalo chicken slice we've ever had. Plus, they have a sweet outdoor garden. We have a feeling they won't be "underrated" for all that long.

Waterfront Ale House

Waterfront Ale House
540 2nd Ave.
New York, NY 10016
212-696-4104
Official Website

Waterfront Ale House is a divey little bar that looks like pretty much every other divey little bar in Murray Hill, but it's much more than that. This place has been a neighborhood favorite for decades, thanks to a great beer selection and way better food than you'd expect to find in a place like this. Come for the venison chili nachos. You heard me.

Penelope

Penelope
159 Lexington Ave.
New York, NY 10016
212-988-8408
Official Review

Penelope can be an absolute zoo during weekend brunch, but we love it for weekday breakfast when the crowds are smaller and the vibe is a bit more relaxed. This place is like a little country home in the middle of the city, with great food, good service, and an excellent selection of coffee mugs that probably came from a garage sale. It all adds up to a restaurant with a lot of character, which is something you don't find much of in this part of town.
