The Best Restaurants In Long Beach Island

If you're from Philly, chances are you grew up heading "down the shore" when the temperature hit 80 degrees. Our friend Michael Sinatra gave us a solid rundown of the best spots around AC last summer, but 25miles north of the East Coast's Vegas lies a barrier island with not a meathead in sight - and plenty of bomb ass meatballs (see: Roberto's).What we love about LBI (besides the lack of meatheads) is its proximity to thecity. In less time than it takes to get to the Hamptons, you can head out for a weekend of quiet beaches, seriously fresh seafood, and a ridiculously good funnel cake if you're feelin' a visit to Fantasy Island.

You might have seen some of this info in our 2014 Summer Guide, butconsider today's Destination Infatuation the director's cut, and consider me the Spike Jonze of your next NJ EEEEEATS beach excursion.

Ship Bottom Shellfish

Perfect For:
Local Seafood

Ship Bottom Shellfish
1721 South Long Beach Blvd.
Ship Bottom, NJ 08008
609-494-0088
Website

Bob Nugent and his wife, Ginna, have been running Ship Bottom Shellfish since 1981. Bob catches and filets the fish, and Ginna cooks them up. From the second you walk in, you know this place is legit. Thick slabs of freshly caught fluke and swordfish greet you behind a shiny counter (you can pick up if you want to cook yourself at home) - and floating lobsters in a massive tank call to you with their googly eyes. The Jumbo Lump Crabcake Sandwich, Flounder Platters, and Ipswich clams are all drool-worthy, but any seafood on the menu will be a winner. A wood-paneled house with a big front porch, this place pulls the biggest crowd on the island every weekend, all summer. Lines can be long, so make a reservation in advance, and be prepared to wait on the deck with a beer.

Roberto's Dolce Vita

Perfect For:
Semi-Upscale Italian

Roberto's Dolce Vita
12907 Long Beach Blvd.
Beach Haven Terrace, NJ 08808
609-492-1001
Website

If you asked us where the best homestyle Italian food on the island is, we'd point you to Roberto's - and then join you and finish your breadbasket. The veal bolognese is absolutely incredible, but the meatballs are the real killer: veal, beef, cheese, Italian breadcrumbs - it's all there. Roberto's is small, rustic, and elegant without being fussy, and the staff is more than happy to squeeze you in on a busy night. The Mozzarella en Carozza is not a mozzarella stick, but something akin to what is served in heaven. Also try the Veal Dolce Vita - veal, eggplant, mozzarella, and thinly sliced prosciutto. Enough said.

Mustache Bill's Diner

Perfect For:
A Hangover

Mustache Bill's Diner
8th St. & Broadway
Barnegat Light, NJ 08006
609-494-0155

This place may be familiar if you watch our future best friend's TV show Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives. A tin box that looks like it could blow away with a slight wind, Mustache Bill's has been slapping down crispy BLTs and massive chocolate chip banana pancakes to multiple generations of LBI families for over 30 years. Plus, they serve breakfast all day. Woke up at 2pm with a killer headache? Pop some Advil, throw on some shorts, and head over here for some life-saving buttery hash browns.

Woodies Burgers

Perfect For:
Old School Burgers

Woodies Burgers
5th Street & Long Beach Blvd.
Ship Bottom, NJ
609-361-7300
Website

You know the malt shop scene in Grease, with the red and white checked table cloths, orange soda, and shoestring fries? This is that place, minus Travolta. Drive up, place your order, and eat at the outside tables. The order, naturally, will be a burger. Then go burn it off at the mini-golf place next door.

Boathouse Restaurant

Perfect For:
Drinking By The Bay

Boathouse Restaurant
116 West Avenue
Beach Haven, NJ 08008
Website

If this place were any closer to the bay, you'd be swimming with the minnows. Bring some friends, grab a table, and order lots of drinks.

Fantasy Delights Gourmet Ice Cream Parlor

Perfect For:
Boardwalk EEEEEATS

Fantasy Delights
320 7th St.
Beach Haven, NJ
609-492-4000
Website

Everything you imagine the shore to be. Tilt-o-Whirl, Carousel, and crispy, crunchy, funnel cake topped with powdered sugar. Cheese fries and cheesesteaks abound here (you're only 55 miles to Philly) but the fried desserts are thereal prize to take home. That, or an enormous stuffed teddy bear.

Showplace LBI

Perfect For:
Ice Cream

Showplace LBI
204 Centre St.
Beach Haven, NJ 08008
609-492-0018
Facebook Page

Showplace is more than simply an ice cream parlor. This place is an institution. Come after a day of beer on the beach, and you'll appreciate it. Or come with kids. Either way, know that you are coming for a sit down show where waiters sing at you (yes, they sing at you) and bring you vats - notbowls - of ice cream sundaes with chocolate sauce so hot it manages to burn your lips but not melt your bowl - a New Jersey miracle. (If you're not intobeing serenaded, Harvey Cedars Ice Cream Parlor is also top notch, minus the tunes.)

Country Kettle Fudge

Perfect For:
Fudge

Country Kettle Fudge
9th St. & Bay Avenue
Beach Haven, NJ 08008
609-492-2800
Website

As a kid, this was the place I begged my parents to take me. As an adult, it's my first (and last) stop on the island. Creamy, dense, melt-in-your-mouthfudge is made right in front of you in the middle of Bay Village (shops, restaurants, and an eerily accurate psychic can also be found here). Take home more than one box of the stuff that people have been bringing back home from LBI since 1965. The Chocolate Chip fudge is incredibly good: think semi-warm cookie dough, cut into squares.
