The Strawberry Basil Daiquiri

You’ll Need:

  • Coupe

  • Ice

  • .75 ounce lime juice

  • .75 ounce strawberry syrup (made from 1 cup strawberries, 1 cup water, and 1 cup sugar)

  • 2 ounces white rum

  • 6 basil leaves

Step One: Strawberry Syrup

Why strawberry syrup? Because if you throw fresh strawberries into a cocktail, they won’t impart much flavor. Make a strawberry syrup (to replace the usual simple syrup that goes in a Daiquiri), and your drink will actually taste like strawberries. Here’s how to do it:

All you need is equal parts sugar, water, and strawberries - let’s go with a cup of each to make things easy. Grab a bowl, add your 1 cup of sugar, then slice up 1 cup of strawberries, and add those as well. Smash each strawberry with a fork until it breaks down, and stir together with the sugar. Now boil your 1 cup of water, and pour it into your strawberry/sugar mixture. Stir everything, then let it sit for 30 minutes. Once you’ve done that, strain the mixture, and pour .75 ounces of this strawberry syrup into your shaker.

Oh, and please don’t throw out the strawberry bits you’ve strained out. You’re going to want to put those on ice cream.

Step Two: Lime Juice

As always, you should use fresh lime juice. It’s a matter of self-respect. Juice a lime, and add .75 ounce lime juice to your shaker.

Step Three: Rum

Just like a regular old daiquiri, you want to use white rum for this drink, because it’s crisp and clean, and it won’t distract too much from all the other ingredients. Add 2 ounces to your shaker.

Step Four: Basil

Some people like to muddle their basil when they add it to cocktails - but this is a pretty delicate herb, so we prefer to toss it right into the shaker without pulverizing it. Pick out around five basil leaves, and throw them in your shaker.

Step Five: Shake

Just by shaking, your cocktail is going to receive plenty of that basil’s flavor. So shake hard for about 15 seconds, then pour your daiquiri into a chilled coupe. You can always use a fine strainer if you’re concerned about small pieces of basil getting stuck in your teeth - but we like the way the little bits look in the drink, and we also aren’t proud enough to be ashamed of the things that get stuck in our teeth. So you just do what feels right. Finally, garnish with a single basil leaf. Float it on top of your drink like a boat setting sail in a placid red ocean. Then think about whether this basil leaf is a metaphor. It isn’t.
